That's another thing that is too often misunderstood. First, a joystick is nothing like an analog stick, because the former works only digital and usually in only eight directions. Analog sticks prior to the Nintendo 64 were so poor that gamers sticked with their d-pads. It's not only about taking existing technologies and applying them in new ways, more importantly it's about implementing them in a way that works (i.e. in games). And the Nintendo 64 marked the first time the analog stick worked and gamers didn't want to play without it anymore. That's why Sony made their analog controller standard (and later on the DualShock, because the Nintendo 64 Rumble Pak was also something that gamers really liked). Force feedback technology also existed on the PC prior to the Nintendo 64, but it was Nintendo who made it a standard, because it worked and the games felt better with it. |
N64 analog was crap. I really hated that controller. The PC analog joystick worked well enough it just got replaced by the mouse.
