I am the black sheep     "of course I'm crazy, but that doesn't mean I'm wrong."-Robert Anton Wilson

This is no comeback.

No 3rd place console has ever had a simultaneous $100 price drop with a remodel and 6 months of pent up demand =).

No 3rd place console just kicked every other home-consoles ass for the past 3 weeks either, if memory serves.

There was discussion a few pages back about the Gamecube doing just that, if memory serves.

By life end:

  • Wii- 100 million+
  • Xbox360- 35~40 million
  • PS3- 30 million
  • PSP- 30~32 million ------------- FAILURE
  • NDS- 85~90 million (Skeptical)  - FAILURE
  • NDS- 100 million+ (Optimistic) -- Success!

A comeback is impressive when you're last and finish first.

This is not like that, is it?

In the wilderness we go alone with our new knowledge and strength.

The discussion with the gamecube was in the US only. Not worldwide, if memory serves.

No, all it did was beat the xbox for a while, not the Playstation 2, besides then GC was cheaper than Ps2 anyway.

___________

Why is this a comeback?

What PS3 has overcome:

- A book about its Failure written in Japan 2 years ago

- $600 at launch

- Terrible publicity in first year

- Beaten by the GBA for months straight in the summer of 2007 in North America

- 3rd Place public mindshare

- Loss of big exclusives

- Threats from activision to stop supporting it

- Many sites in early - mid 2009 saying SONY should discontinue it & so on

- No games aura of early - mid 2007

_________

To overcome all those things & come out with such sales.....imo is a comeback. It went from the pits of hell to the bombarded fields of the Console war, flying like tinkerbell did in Peter Pan.

Like it or not, PS3 was DOOMED in early 07 & 09.....it had a "Mock Comeback" in 2007/2008, now it has an ACTUAL Comeback, It was outsold by GBA (in 2007 america) & PS2 (in japan this year), it had a wonderful book about its failure written for it (a first for a home console).

See it REALLY did everything & will continue to do everything.

It does everything!

Both the 360 and Wii are down YOY. I don't recall seeing a console drop in sales after a price cut.

You're saying that it's a no brainer the PS3 is up YoY then? If so, I agree, although not every console with a price drop sees an intial boost as large as the PS3's has been.

and not every console has been as ridiculously overpriced for so long as the PS3 has been.... it was bound to be thus.

oh really?

looking at your predictions for PS3 slim sales before it launched wouldn't give me a feeling you knew it was "bound to be thus"......if I'm taking its meaning literally.

Honestly this does help the industry, but I would caution you to wait a couple of months before declaring this a comeback.

It shows that the world hasn't given up on sony. The loyalty is still there
