In my opinion, Nintendo is in the perfect position to launch a new console before anyone else. But given the success of the Wii, would this be a wise idea? I know people are beginning to adopt HDTV's as the standard, and by 2010-11ish, with HD becoming more and more affordable, market share is expected to boom. I'm thinking Nintendo doesn't want Sony and MS to be the only ones with the advantage in this market. |
I sense faulty logic here. More people buying HD TVs doesn't automatically mean that more people will care about their games resolution. There won't be a new market for HD consoles.
Anyone who didn't buy aa HD TV yet is probably an ignorant, "casual" TV user, who wouldn't even consider buying one until it costs only slightly more than a CRT TV, because for them, it's only clear advantage is that its shape looks more "futuristic", and fits on the coffee table.
I just can't see anyone who decides to finally buy a HDTV, (only because their CRT TV broke down and they don't sell them in the store anymore), and doesn't even know that it is called HDTV, they just call it a "Plasma"(even if it's LCD) will be terrified by the Wii's resolution.
Also, I think their financial superiority might be a reason to keep the Wii. They can lay back, and even if the Wii would keep selling significantly less than now, they would still make a respectable profit. On the other hand, Sony and Microsoft are forced to do something. You would say that this is exactly they would need to restore their profitability before, but I don't think they CAN. It's their 3th/4th year, and they are still struggling for profits. I can clearly see them being sold for $100-200 in 2011, with a similar financial situation, or being less than irrelevant with the current prices. (presuming that the OP article is right about their motion controllers).
