Forums - Sales - S-E: NEW Wii in 2011, motion 'impact' for PS360 = SMALL!

First of all, Nintendo is huge this gen. Out of the big 3, they are probably the only ones who aren't financially exhausted like MS or Sony. In my opinion, Nintendo is in the perfect position to launch a new console before anyone else. But given the success of the Wii, would this be a wise idea? I know people are beginning to adopt HDTV's as the standard, and by 2010-11ish, with HD becoming more and more affordable, market share is expected to boom. I'm thinking Nintendo doesn't want Sony and MS to be the only ones with the advantage in this market.

I sense faulty logic here. More people buying HD TVs doesn't automatically mean that more people will care about their games resolution. There won't be a new market for HD consoles.

Anyone who didn't buy aa HD TV yet is probably an ignorant, "casual" TV user, who wouldn't even consider buying one until it costs only slightly more than a CRT TV, because for them, it's only clear advantage is that its shape looks more "futuristic", and fits on the coffee table.

I just can't see anyone who decides to finally buy a HDTV, (only because their CRT TV broke down and they don't sell them in the store anymore), and doesn't even know that it is called HDTV, they just call it a "Plasma"(even if it's LCD) will be terrified by the Wii's resolution.

Also, I think their financial superiority might be a reason to keep the Wii. They can lay back, and even if the Wii would keep selling significantly less than now, they would still make a respectable profit. On the other hand, Sony and Microsoft are forced to do something. You would say that this is exactly they would need to restore their profitability before, but I don't think they CAN.  It's their 3th/4th year, and they are still struggling for profits. I can clearly see them being sold for $100-200 in 2011, with a similar financial situation, or being less than irrelevant with the current prices. (presuming that the OP article is right about their motion controllers).

Reading the full interview on the Financial Times, I would not take it as S-E getting behind Nintendo. (Free registration required -- see www.FT.com)

While the quoted section talks about how the Sony and Microsoft motion tech won't change much this generation, the full interview praises Project Natal and says type of control will become the new standard.

Mr Wada said he rated the technology in devices such as Microsoft’s Project Natal controller very highly. “As a user interface it’s fantastic and I think it will become standard,” he said.

He also blamed Nintendo for the drop in the industry -- year-to-year.

He attributed most of the industry’s slowdown to weaker sales of Nintendo games so far this year. In contrast to last year, Nintendo has not released many of its big titles in the first half of 2009.

Mike from Morgantown

He's the second CEO (Marvelous CEO) to blame Nintendo for not releasing enough games this year. I never pictured that Nintendo games were the only games that can "MOVE" the industry forward.

...Whats gonna happen next year with the 1st Party games that Nintendo plan to release, "We couldn't have any success on Nintendo's platform cause of the strength of there first party."

I think you misunderstand him here. He was explaining that "the recession was having only a limited effect on game sales." The reason for the large year over year drops is because Nintendo's explosive software has been absent (so far), rather than lower game sales all around.

He wasn't saying the industry is suffering because Nintendo hasn't been releasing games.

As for the new Wii, I disagree with him. I don't think the next console will be a multimedia center, nor do I think it'll come 2011 (as of now, 2012 is my bet).

sc94597 - 2006 indeed, where is my brain today?

But that only means the Wii is less likely to be released in 2011.

And if it's based on sales sucess, why was the DS released before the Wii? The GBA sure spanked the GC in sales :P

1986, 1991, 1996, 2001, 2006 notice a pattern here? For the last 20+ years Nintendo has released a new console every 5 years. They did so when they were winning and when they were losing. I know they've said they expect this gen to last longer than 5 years and that they have no plans to release a console anytime soon, but I could see them launching a successor to the Wii in 2011. Especially if millions of consumers lose interest in the Wii and HDTV's occupy the majority of homes by mid 2011. Patcher's fabled WiiHD will probably never come to fruition as I've never seen Nintendo internally upgrade or modify any of their consoles.

Actually, the original Nintendo launched in 1984 - Japan, 1985 - to limited areas in America. It saw a BIGGER launch in 1986 to more American territories and Europe.

The SNES - launched in 1990

Although I slighlty see your point, Nintendo hasn't always stuck to a 5-year release rule...

The NES came out in Japan in 1983.  Says so in the link you just posted.

And there were a few Color Game TV consoles before that, in Japan only, starting in 1977.

Well, why would anyone think Sony's or MS's motion controllers are going to be significant?

It's called fanboy logic.

thats y i have natal will fail to produce HW sales in my sig i was 1st who stared all this talk though

i dont C Y people will go out to buy a 360 natal package wen all they need is the natal part of it to work on there 360s

same thing for ps3 although i wont mock it and talk about it in my sig but motion controls to me is so over rated dont think it will do much to bump HW up for a long period of time

i do think wii 2 will come out b4 ps360 but not in 2011

The DS was pretty much a test in the waters for the Wii. A very risky one may I add. If they failed they not only lost their console division generations though, but their handheld one. It was mainly to see what audiences they can tap into. Also they may have not been done with the concept of the Wii, and the DS could have been close to finished. The DS is selling amazing though, and they aren't going to stop that potential. Btw an example of a handheld lasting longer than the console is the GB which was released in the Nes era up until the N64 era. So like I said I extremely doubt Nintendo thinks " oh we released x handheld 5 yrs ago, we need to release a new one, but it has to be before we release X console".

For some reason I can see this gen going on until 2013.

That's probably when Sony will finally start making money on their hardware!?  Mind you, this gen will continue well after the next gen starts, with the exception of the 360 which MS may bring to an abrupt halt just like they did with the XBox (depending on whether it's making money for them or not).

I think we'll see the next XBox and the next PS in 2012 (and I still think we'll see the next Wii in 2011).
