The DS was pretty much a test in the waters for the Wii. A very risky one may I add. If they failed they not only lost their console division generations though, but their handheld one. It was mainly to see what audiences they can tap into. Also they may have not been done with the concept of the Wii, and the DS could have been close to finished. The DS is selling amazing though, and they aren't going to stop that potential. Btw an example of a handheld lasting longer than the console is the GB which was released in the Nes era up until the N64 era. So like I said I extremely doubt Nintendo thinks " oh we released x handheld 5 yrs ago, we need to release a new one, but it has to be before we release X console".
