Just imagine getting your first pokémon, going around in the wilds together with other trainers, and then you find a pokémon and the gameplay becomes pokémon stadium-like and you fight it and then catch it if you can. Some things like the dungeons where you get Zapdos and Lugia and maybe fight team rocket should be instanced, and really difficult so that not everyone can have Zapdos or Lugia. There should be no NPC trainers (maybe only a few like gym leaders) All trainer battles should be with real people and would work similar to duels in WoW and play like pokémon stadium. Other trainers should be able to watch other people's pokémon battles. There should be a real pokémon legua organized with real players in game. People should be able to trade pokémon. I could go on forever. |
All of which would be done in a month or less and then players would be bored and leave.
I don't think you understand the depth and the amount of content in Wow....
I dont think its possible using the current system - a pokemon MMO would be primarily PvP and in the case of pokemon, without at least a considerable overhaul to the battle system (turn based battles on a pay-to play MMO? theres already a freeware pokemon MMO mind you) and i just dont see it working out. At least i think the system would have to get a far more customizable aspect to better atune for the whole "MMO" aspect.
It can be done, especially if it expands considerably with respect to the pokemon universe ( Game moderators / paid employees being gym leaders, perhaps? assign yourself to a gym for perks? etc), but right now i'd say no. Perhaps in 1 or 2 more poke-generations from now, when we get more variety in the battle system - perhaps stance-attacks? i.e. defense curl powers up rollout, why not allow different variations of other attacks? tail whip working as a pseudo-fly as seen in the anime? Agility powering up speed-based moves? etc.
And regarding maplestory - while yes the game is targetted at the younger crowd, there is a rediculously large portion of the community that are college players and older. Hell, more than half the people who i've played with are at bare minimum 16 years old.
um..stuff

Couldn't have said better myself.
You need more than a brand name to make a successful MMO!

Its probably bigger to be honest. Whats the typical sales? Somewhere up near 10M?
Tease.

It's pokémon, what attracts players is the addictive gameplay. Being a Nintendo game it would have to appear on Wii, so wow will not be direct competition.
I LOVE ICELAND!

Well over, usually. And I think the Op was talking about a potential Pokemon MMO, not Pokemon as it is now. Pokemon is already bigger than WOW by that metric.

Not really, unless you are going back to the gameboy releases. WoW has probably sold similarly to Diamond/Pearl.

16 million, eh? I suppose that's fair, but at the same time that's how many people continue to buy Pokemon every time it's released. At any given time, that's roughly Pokemon's installbase: WoW has never gotten that high in terms of registered users, not ever.

They only release how many people are currently paying. No trial accounts, no frozen accounts, etc. People continue to not only buy the WoW expansions, but also pay up to ~$15 a month. Do you really think 12 million people still play Diamond/Pearl even when it costs them nothing beyond the initial investment?
