The DS would have seen its sales drop this year too if it were not for the DSi, which now is bringing old DS Phat and DS Lite owners to also buy the DS again in addition to new DS 'virgins'.
Last year the DS in Japan went through a period where its sales were down big down for months and months until Nintendo released the DSi.
The PS3 is also down YoY until the Slim + Price Cut. The PSP is also down YoY. The 360 is about even from a year ago, but that really could because it was the only system that had a recent price reduction last fall helping it weather the storm.
Maybe its time to acknowledge the recession is hurting game sales. Every news broadcast, every Dr. Phil, Oprah, etc. is telling consumers to curb their spending and only spend on bargains. People are afraid of losing their job or have lost their job.
You need to give consumers more incentive to pull out that credit card these days ... I think that's just the reality. Blue Ocean and all those buzz words don't mean as much in this recession.
Its also easy to say "make more games" ... you can't just make a game in 3 months, even something like Wii Sports Resort probably takes a minimum 18 months to get out. Nintendo is investing in a huge new R&D facility next to their Kyoto HQ, but the benefits from not will not be felt until probably the next wave of Nintendo game machines (Wii 2/DS 2) as I don't even know if they've broken ground on construction for the new building. That's probably 2 years out at least.
