Forums - Gaming - Namco Dev EXPLAINS why TOV was a Timed 360 Exclusive (SHOCK)!

I wouldn't say that Sony are bad for blackmailing devs to make their version better, I look at it as Sony looking out for consumers. For someone like me, that has only a PS3 (for the moment), and wanting to buy a game like ToV, it sucks that I have to pay full price on a year old port, so the new additions makes the pill easier to swallow.

Looks like Namco, Microsoft, and Sony all benefited one way or another.

Namco saved money on development costs.

Microsoft more than doubled their fan base in Japan.

Sony still got the game without much effort.

On the other hand, a lot of JRPG fans sure got screwed over...

That's pretty wise... too bad I'm in the last group :/ (I did cave in and bought a 360 for that game too)

As for Sony paying for the extra content, no reason to. Sony will make some money from the licensing. Some more units sold to the fans. Namco is still getting the majority of the profits from that game. Up to them whether they want to make it, but obviously it's worth the extra revenue (and the extra not-killing-your-franchise-in-Japan factor).
MS paid for the exclusivity, Namco accepted the cash. Come on, it's not like it was impossible to develop for the PS3 at the time, it was just easier and in this case a lot more profitable not to.

edit: @S.T.A.G.E. There are a lot of game from 3rd party studios for which neither MS nor Sony paid anything. There is no need to pay at all, the studio makes the games to profit from them, they should expect their revenue from there. MS decided that it was good to pay to receive the special treatment, and got what they paid for.
Now Namco wants to sell a year old game at full price, WHY shouldn't Sony demand extra content (for one it stops the game becoming more harm than good to the console for being a late port,, messy seconds), for another it's good for the fans to have the extra content.
It's Namco wanting the special treatment here, not Sony. They have to do the extra work/take the extra cost. And it's pretty certain they will manage to cover it.

I understand where you're coming from, but you're not getting what I am saying. Microsoft paid for special treatment, so why doesn't Sony. Sony has their fingers around Japan like the Yakuza. This is why they get special treatment with JRPG's without having to pay like Microsoft would. It is a double edged sword in this business that Japan only seems to play a part in.

Why should Sony pay for it if they have waited a year for the game itself?

The question isn't why they should pay for the game. It is a question as to why they get perks and extra content that essentially 360 owners should be getting as well (Since it was funded by Microsoft and they admitted it). Things in Japan work differently, where business stays loyal whether fair or unfair to the world. First of all, TOV shouldn't be sold at full price, but Sony would rather not get the game if that wasn't so. As I said, Sony is the gateway for HD titles to the Japanese audience. If the tables were turned Microsoft would never get this treatment.

@outlawauron

lol. I just realized Magna is being published by Namco in the US.

Yeap It's going to PS3 confirmed :P

It's just that simple.

Sony had this policy since day 1 and we cry about it now?

Exactly. This thread is pretty funny.

@ STAGE

Sony gets these perks because they did not get the game at the same time as the 360 did. That's why.

SO4 port is already confirmed.

Well, for the PS3 version I'm not really surprised, extra content is Sony's policy for porting and it makes good sense especially since it's a late port.

And I don't have a gram of sympathy for Namco, first they picked the path of least resistence with making it xbox360 exclusive for a year, then they put for the game what has to be the most pathetic DLC ever.

Thats not the point. Sony not paying for the extra content in their version is the problem whilst allowing Microsoft to cover their ends. Thats very bad business.

How is it bad business? Sony gets a better product for no extra money? If So4 has near the amount of changes Tales has, then it's near guaranteed to outsell the 360 version.

Namco always knew it would outsell the 360 version, but they need Japan and Sony wont let them sell it to Japan if they dont get what they want.

Really, who cares if Sony pays anything? As a gamer who was waiting, all you would see is a reason as to why the wait was worth it.

Namco also had to do this. Did they expect a game to sell gangbusters as a carbon copy of a year old version of the game?

Enough blaming everything on Sony, cry at MS for not demanding more for their money.

The new stipulation is you can't add anything extra if it goes PS3, and has to run at half the frames per second!

Did MS fans cry when UT3 on 360 came with extras?

But doesn't the PS3 version still have better overall features? It was because MS didn't want mods/map creators on the 360 or something along those lines.
