Forums - Sales - Nintendo: "Currently no plans" for Wii price cut

I can't belive people trust there will be no price cut because Nintendo doesn't confirm it.

It's not that I trust Nintendo. It's that I don't trust Kotaku, and the only "bad" thing about all of this is that people still choose to trust such an unethical band of biased fratboys. Their journalistic integrity is worse than zero, and this should have been dismissed for the hoax that it is long ago. Give me a source that can't be traced back to them -and even the latest leaks are, conveniently, theirs and theirs alone- and then I'll be impressed. Until then, either they cooked this up out of whole cloth or they've fallen for some anonymous hoaxster due to their own fratcore wishful thinking.

Complexity is not depth. Machismo is not maturity. Obsession is not dedication. Tedium is not challenge. Support gaming: support the Wii.

What do I hate about modern gaming? I hate tedium replacing challenge, complexity replacing depth, and domination replacing entertainment. I hate the outsourcing of mechanics to physics textbooks, art direction to photocopiers, and story to cheap Hollywood screenwriters. I hate the confusion of obsession with dedication, style with substance, new with gimmicky, old with obsolete, new with evolutionary, and old with time-tested.
There is much to hate about modern gaming. That is why I support the Wii.

Wii sales increased 3% in America this week. Why? =O

GH5, Rockband Beatles...

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

Like many have already said we will find out soon enough. But I think I'm leaning more towards believing the price cut is true. With supposed leaks from three circulars, plus an event Nintendo will be at the day before the price cut is supposed to take effect, it seems logical. Plus I agree with what others have been saying in this thread, about not being sure how big a boost Nintendo's software will give the Wii. Wii Sports Resort hasn't done that much yet despite being a huge success. And this week with Rock Band opening to greater than 200k sales in America, Wii only managed a 3% weekly boost. Even if the game is multiplatform, the Wii only has a few games set to release that will open with greater than 200k in one region.

Well what would the game need to have to make it a sequel anyways? 100 exercises?

Wii Sports Resort is just beginning to increase HW sales (Iwata said it would take 6-8 weeks). Wii sales remained flat this week, the seventh week since Wii Sports Resort was released worldwide. We should see HW sales slowly picking up week after week as we head into the holidays.

Of course if a price cut happens it will only accelerate all this, which is probably why Nintendo is considering it.

That's a big lie. The Wii has been going down in sales weekly since the game launched.

Wii is now selling less units than before they released WSR.

Bets with Conegamer:

Pandora's Tower will have an opening week of less than 37k in Japan. (Won!)
Pandora's Tower will sell less than 100k lifetime in Japan.
Stakes: 1 week of avatar control for each one.

Iwata said this at the Financial Q & A in August:

"In September, which people overseas call "back-to-school," people start to pay more attention to home consoles. If we can convey the appeal of Wii Sports Resort to existing customers then, it will surely contribute to the sales of hardware and generate good momentum toward the holiday season. So we feel that Wii Sports Resort will drive hardware sales mainly in Q3 from October to December."

HW sales have been going down since WSR launched, but at launch there was a large hardware boost due to this being released (plus MH3 and Black Wii in Japan). So it's really only down about 9k since July and actually up 5k since May.

And as the quote says, Iwata didn't really expect hardware sales to be driven upward until the third quarter. So if in December Wii is still down 50%, then you can come back here and make me eat crow.

there's never a price cut on the horizon until it happens

All but confirmed now. This'll really boost Wii's sales into orbit and put it back in first.

Malstrom will be pissed, but Nintendo is going to have a monster holiday.
