Forums - PC - Fun Topic. Which are better for Gaming? PC's or Consoles?

Its all about games for me, replayability and freedom to be able to do 'anything' hardware can support. I like games with some intellectual challenges. Haven't found any on consoles apart from some puzzle games, which however usually need more good reflexes than brains. And freedom, consoles are highly commercial and you really can't do anything but play games with them. Also theres really no support for old games. If your console breaks, you cannot play those games unless you buy new one and if they don't make those anymore you are pretty much screwed unless you want to pay several thousands on ebay for some old console. On PC you can play any old PC game you have and as a bonus just about every old console/arcade game there has been.

If you're willing to put in a bit of effort for you're gaming hobby, then PC will easily offer the best experience.

Mods, larger variety, larger back catalogue, better visuals, better control schemes, emulation. What puts most people off is the extra effort to get games to work on the PC, and all the extra optimisation, but if you're willing to go through that then PC is definately the better experience.

Consoles except for the wii.
no haters plz

1) From the outside, looking in, I have to say consoles. It's what they're specifically designed to do. PC games may push graphics, but can they compete with the diversity, reliability, durability, variety, and Mr. T of console gaming?

2) I'm not a PC gamer, aside from a few flash games. If there's a PC gamer, maybe they can enlighten me. My opinion is that the VERY BEST may be on PC's but the MOST fun will always be found on consoles.

1) They can compete quite easily. On the PC you have the largest back catalogue of games from the widest range of genres, especially if you include emulation. When you get a new console, there is no gaurantee it'll be backwards compatable with previous games, and they will usually charge you again for digital downloads of games you're probably already bought. For certain genres (namely FPS, TPS and RTS) the PC keyboard and mouse combo is unbeatable. For others you can connect a 360 or 3rd-party controller. The biggest problem with PC gaming is optimisation, and drivers etc. but they're always workwrounds.

2) PCs have the same library as consoles for the most part + a whole bunch of extra games NOT available on consoles. You can find a lot of fun games on the PC. I have more actual fun playing PC games then console games (and I've played both for most of my life), and the experiences I've had playing PC games are easily among the very the best gaming experiences I've had in gaming.

I say console gaming. Even if it has become more complicated lately, with installs and such, buying a console will still give you a good 6 years of support without any modifications or upgrades. With a PC, you buy top of the line hardware, within six months it's average, within another six months, it's outdated.

This is completely untrue.

PS360 are obsolete too, you know, and have been for a while.  The difference is that in the case of PCs, you have the option to upgrade, even though it's not necessarily required.

To add to that,

If you're talking about stuff like reliability and durability, that's where building your own computer can be good. Since there are so many companies that offer computer hardware all you have to do is go to a site like newegg and check out reviews for the things you want to buy. Sure it's not fool proof, but I don't see consoles having perfect reliability either. Taking the time to learn how to do things can be a great asset though.

As for having the 'MOST' fun, that's all based on personal preference. I have my PC as well as console and I have tons of fun with both. The amount of time I spend on either one is usually based on which game I'm engrossed in at the time.

I also have some 15' USB extension wires ($1.60 each ftw) and a DVI-HDMI adapter coming from monoprice and I hope to be able to connect to the HDTV in the other room next week.

Yes, the PS3 and 360 are obsolete and have dated hardware. But for the full console lifecycle, developers will be developing for that obsolete and dated hardware, whereas with a PC, you may have just bought the NVIDIA GeForce 6600, and then a year later you won't be able to run any games until you get the latest hardware, the NVIDIA GeForce 6700 or 6601 or whatever.

I have to say that it is a tie for me. As you can see from my collection. I have a lot of console and PC games. I would have to say that I prefer my shooters on my consoles. Due to the fact that I really enjoy splitscreen action, and that is something that can't be done on the PC(That I have seen)

I also like any strategy games better on the PC, any strategy game(I found Viva Pinata controls are far better on the PC) though Halo Wars did show that it could be done on a console well.

On a sidenote. I enjoy fighters more on my Ps3 and shooters more on my Wii

Until this generation I would have said both were required to get the full experience, but seeing how the HD Consoles try to replicate the PC experience, I would say either PC or PC/Wii. I say PC over the HD Consoles since there is a much larger back catalog, and games have much more options. Games are usually made for PCs then ported to consoles anyway. So Either PC or Wii. Let me say this though, Handhelds=PC> All consoles this generation. The handhelds are truly succeeding and evolving the console gaming of last generation imo.

I prefer playing on a console, but there are people that prefer playing on a PC
