2009 - Square Enix's E3 announcement of Nier concerned European and North American markets only. In Japan, where the game is being developed by Cavia, makers of Drakengard, a release was never announced.
Until today, that is. Famitsu's latest issue, set for publication on Thursday, offers the first word on Japanese Nier titles.
That's right, titles -- plural. There are two Nier games in this week's Famitsu. One, Nier Gestalt, is just the Japanese version of the Neir game that was shown at E3. The other, Nier RepliCant, appears to be a new game.
We already have details and screens on Gestalt, which was demonstrated for the press at E3. Famitsu lists a 2010 release period for the Japanese version.
The only area of concern is that Famitsu's article states that the game is for the Xbox 360. It makes no mention of PlayStation 3.
RepliCant is shown in the magazine only as an advertisement. The ad makes no mention of platform or release time frame, but does promise a reveal in the magazine's next issue, due out next Thursday.
So has Gestalt's PS3 version been cancelled? Or is RepliCant the PS3 version of the game?
There are a few additional possible permutations, but we'll leave the speculation to you.
