You start, talk to a king a bit, walk across the map fighting random monsters, go into a cave, fight more monsters, find the treasure/boss at the end, leave the cave, fight more random monsters, go back to the king, fight more random monsters along the way, and give the king the mcguffin.  Rinse and repeat in various areas with different monsters with different places you return to.

It's basically an RPG at (arguably) its simplest form.

@darth

Pokemon fanboy - very likely

FF fanboy - 50/50.

That's my take.

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.

I think you can't go wrong with either DS remakes.  I've played them both and enjoyed them.  DQ4 has a more diverse cast but DQ5 lets you tame monsters.

Dragon Quest is inspired by older western RPG like Ultima and Wizardry.  Most of them are in First Person perspective, aside from the most recent ones following DQVIII on.  But while they used those games as a model, they set themselves apart by using a simple interface (Fight, Magic, Item, Run) as their commands in battle, while basing the story and player interaction around exploration and NPC interaction.  Basically, Dragon Quest is the forbarer to what we know as the 'JRPG', and most RPGs made in Japan either utilize a similar system to Dragon Quest or try to do something radically different to market themselves as something unique from the series (such as the Tales series, Shin Megami Tensei Series or Star Ocean series).

If you like Pokemon, you will feel right at home playing the Dragon Quest Monsters series or something like Dragon Quest V.

If you like Final Fantasy, you might have reservations, as Dragon Quest focuses on gameplay and exploration over story and graphics.  However, give it a chance and you might understand why the series chooses the setup (faster battles and more attention to NPC interaction and exploration).

Six upcoming games you should look into:
