Forums - Gaming - The arrogance of publishers

Who else thinks the idea of releasing a single "test" game is ridiculous? I could understand if there were great core games released for Wii that bombed and then ported over to PS360 and were a huge hit. I don't think Madworld would have sold any better on 360. But hey, Madworld wouldn't even run on 360. Even with them reducing the requirements to 480p. Madworld was 480i, what a joke. I wouldn't be surprised if that fact actually prevented people from purchasing it.

The problem is these companies have great ideas, but poor execution. Gamers are picky, and pissy. Imagine if MS tried to release a 480p Halo. Doesn't matter how great the game is, it wouldn't sell as well simply because the gamers would be outraged. It doesn't matter how good Spore was, people didn't buy it because of DRM. All it takes is one sizable screw up to kill a game.

Dead Space Extraction and the fact that it is On-Rails could be that screw up. Probably the worst direction you could go with a game is taking AWAY control from the player. Not to say on-rail shooters are bad, and Wii is certainly perfect for these types of games, but doesn't the Wii have enough of them already?

But it doesn't matter. Its not the publishers and developer's fault for not giving customers the media they desire, ITS THE CUSTOMER'S FAULT FOR NOT BUYING WHAT THE INDUSTRY SHOVES AT THEM.

"Oh well, 'Leisure Suit Larry Wii: Jamaican Jerk Off' didn't sell well on Wii, guess there isn't a harcore gamer crowd on Wii!"

The fact is, gamers may simply not buy Dead Space Extraction because they are offended by EA.

I agree, some publishers have a really lousy attitude when it comes to customer relations.

This particular test is flawed right from the start. If the original Dead Space had been a 'test' for the HD platforms, it would have been a failure, but this European VP expects the Wii to pass when the IP is moved to a different -- and heavily saturated -- genre in only its second outing? Seems like the Wii is being set up for failure here.

I want EA to clone Peter Moore so they can put Clone Moore in charge of the rest of EA.

If someone passed over MadWorld because they're that concerned about seeing those 480 vertical pixels displayed progressively instead of interlaced, well. I pity that person, that's all i say.

yea. it would be too bad. but i wouldn't be surprised. but its stuff like that "core" gamers care about.

No its not the arrogance of publishers its the arrogance of you for presuming to tell them what to do with their money/resources.

If publishers are highly profitable and successful by most measures it really isn't my place to question their decisions because they seem to be working for them ... With a company like EA that continues to see record losses off of record revenues it is entirely reasonable to question their management practices; and (if you hold stock) to get rid of the CEO and/or board of directors for such a poor performance.

Now, I understand that some major publishers decided to give their well known IPs to their best studios and only release them on the HD consoles as a way to manage the risk of budgets which often pass $40 Million; but a lot of their problems are caused by these decisions being that there are few well known core games produced for the Wii that are developed by decent developers.

L337/hardcore gamers aren't major forces in the general gaming market anyway. The only reason they have consoles now is because of Xbox. If a developer wants to make a game that sells on the Wii, don't make it for some L337/hardcore audience, make it for the mainstream gaming audience where right now there is a need for a real quality RPG (not some L337 style dungeons and dragons, bioware, or Bethesda game, a REAL RPG along the lines of Chrono Trigger, Dragon Quest, or Final Fantasy). Another popular new trend are motion exersize and activity games.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

I think we should create "The arrogance of members" thread.
