This is not heavy metal. I dont like hippie/punk music.

Meh, most heavy metal is crap anyways.  :-p

Though I just found a band called Nightwish today and I've been digging them.  They're a mix between rock and symphony and I kind of like it.  There's even an Irish sounding song in there which is pretty awesome.

Yeah, Nightwish are rock solid.

R esident Nightwish expert reporting for duty.  *salutes*

What album were you listening to?  Irish sounding song?  Was it a song called the Islander?

I got Dark Passion Play with all the instrumental songs, and yeah, The Islander was the Irish sounding one I was thinking of.  I was going to pick up another one of their CD's but iTunes suggested Kamelot so decided to try one of theirs though I haven't listened to it yet.

-edit-

Whoops, also forgot to say the sound I found them through was Mindnight Waltz (or something close to that) though I couldn't find that song on iTunes so I got Dark Passion Play instead after listening to some samples.

^"Bye bye beautiful" is an extremely addictive song on that album. I've listened to it constantly in the past week including today.

I think Century Child is my favorite album by Nightwish though.

I checked Makingmusic's Last.fm list (or whatever the site is)
There's lots of good stuff like Maiden Metallica Kamelot Therion Nightwish Children of Bodom Iced Earth Ensiferum Ozzy.

Only Amorphis is missing (if we exclude the heavier realms of thrash, death and black metal).

Well, and Queensrÿche, Sabbath, Dio and tons of other 80's bands of course.

they sound like No Doubt version 2.0 (early no doubt, at least)

I'm sorry, but I respectfully disagree. They sound absolutely nothing like No Doubt. Early No Doubt ESPECIALLY. There isn't a single thing about Paramore's sound that resembles ska.

In any case, Paramore is my favorite guilty pleasure and hayley is fucking SMOKING hot

Really depends on the No Doubt album. I think that their bit in between Tragic Kingdom and Return of Saturn was more punk-ish like Paramore:

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

I think No Doubt's best albums were during that Self-Titled- Beacon Street Collection - Tragic Kingdom era. On the basis of those 3 albums, I still really really like them. But if all they had was some of the newer stuff, I probably wouldn't have been hooked.

I give them lots and LOTS of credit for experimenting with new sounds and evolving their music. It gives each album a marked identity and personality.

I listen to plenty of Sabbath and Dio, just through other means because I'm too broke to buy CDs in bulk like I used to.

And yes, I have this strange need to always by the CD.  I have over 50 CDs.

@Twesterm:  Dark Passion Play showcases there some one newer sound, with a new vocalist.  Their older sound was generally les symphonic, incorporating more synthesizers instead.  It also featured a more opratic vocalist, the lovely Tarja Turinen.  Of course, their album just prior to Dark Passion Play, called Once, shows off the best of Nightwish, joining the voice of Tarja with a full symphony, resulting in songs like this (ignore the Warhammer stuff):

Kamelot are also an excellent band, though more progressive.  The Black Halo and Ghost Opera are two must have albums.

Completely agree. I'd rather listen to intense, heavy music than this stuff. I used to like Paramore until I opened my eyes and realized that there's better music out there that my ears deserve.

Hmm, so I downloaded Angel's Fall First and Oceanborn and I think I'm glad they got rid of that chick.  There are some good songs but her voice just seems a bit too classical and I don't like those CD's nearly as much.
