PS3 fans seem to hype up games and not back it up. Frankly, I find it annoying.

I admit to hyping it up, I was excited to PLAY the game. Although I thought it would sell more (and thus am a little disappointed) and considering the time of year it released, and the flooded FPS market, it didn't do too bad. I would've expected it to be at 2.5mill by now though...

I think most people forget the hype this game had, at least on the internet. Seriously, this game was hyped at incredible levels on the internet. It made Gears of War look like nothing. And then when the time came for it to actually sell, all the PS3 owners vanished.

As you and I both know, internet hype does nothing in the real world. People in the real world didn't hype this game to no end, even though the internet ate it up...

Well, internet hype seems to work for the 360. Not to draw a comparison, but I don't see why there's such a discrepancy with the PS3.

That isn't internet hype, it's real world hype. Microsoft has far better advertising than Sony, and the 360 is much bigger in America, where most software is sold, particularly for shooters.

As much as the internet hyped it, your average PS3 owner still has no idea what it is. Or if they do, they're too busy playing Call of Duty to care.

Halo 3 is an extreme, but 360 outsells ps3 in PAL and Jpn as well.  The which which is mind boggling, given the sales disparity.

I'm am very confused with this post.

And 360 outsells PS3 in Japan at times, yes, but PS3 outsells the 360 in Japan on a regular. And very soon, that probably won't happen again.

I still don't see what that has to do with Killzone 2, but oh well...

I'm talking about Shooters selling in Japan and PAL...even though 360 has parity...Halo 3 sold 120K to 80K for KZ2 i nthe land of the rising sun.

I think KZ2 sales are about what I'd expect on PS3. The playstation brand has not really, IMO, been home to big FPS sales as such (apart from the big franchises, like Medal of Honor on PS2 and CoD on PS3) and at this point around 2M is roughly what I'd expect with the install base and the demographic for an exclusive IP like Killzone.

KZ2 cost a lot, but elements of the game and its cost need to be viewed in line with a higher degree of risk to expand the console - particularly in US and UK - to the big FPS gamers. Sony decided to try and push out Killzone as a flagship FPS, backed by smaller titles like Resistance, to try and swing some of the audience for those games to their console, and to show the console was a viable platform in those genres.

I'd say the results were mixed to poor - but that's to be expected, the harcode 360 owners in US and UK simply were not going to switch for a few titles, no matter how good.

So Killzone will trundle on, pass 2M - and if PS3 Slim sells well expect it to get a second wind as a core title, but I personally never expected any exclusive IP FPS on PS3 to reach heights of Halo, Gears, etc.

In the end I expect Killzone to deliver an okay profit (the DLC is expensive but sells well apparently so that will have helped a great deal) and with the engine there I expect to see a less costly Killzone 3 appear and sell around the same, delivering a decent profit across both titles vs total investment.

The 360 big sellers seem like an obvious comparison, and in terms of competitive position and market ownership they are, but anyone expecting PS3 titles like Killzone to achieve anything like Halo are going to be disappointed IMHO. Remember, Xbox FPS outsold similar titles on PS2 with a fraction of the install base - you really think the PS3 has a better chance at this point?

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

"you really think the PS3 has a better chance at this point?"

that's assuming people are being reasonable and rational in their expectations...pardon the pun!

I know - life would be some much simpler, etc. etc. but then the internet would be duller!

Because Sony can't make good games which would sell. Obviously, I don't count simulators as them being quite far away from the definition of game.

For whatever reason, Microsoft advertises better than Sony. I remember seeing the Gears of War Mad World ad every day for weeks.

themanwithnoname's law: As an America's sales or NPD thread grows longer, the probabilty of the comment "America = World" [sarcasticly] being made approaches 1.

the game was average at best 7/10 for me. The sales are average at best so they suit each other

Well despite what the over hyping on the internet would suggest, the property was never that big to begin with. I mean even before Call of Duty 4, more people had heard of that franchise than Killzone. I mean Killzone was a lackluster PS2 game and a decent PSP. Both that had a decent amount of sales but nothing to really make a huge brand. Just enough to get a decent sized basis.

I mean the game was never going to be a huge seller considering those circumstances. Actually to the contrary of what most are saying, it probably sold better releasing in the time it did then in the holidays. That brand would have been crushed by multiple other brands had it released during the holiday season. Would have had to compete with at least a COD game and we saw how that worked out for Resistance.

Personally I think the sales are pretty good. Will get to around 2 million lifetime sales if not a little more when it goes to platinum hits. Considering the brand before that I'd say that's pretty good. Should have turned a profit (although not a big one) so I think Sony should be relatively happy.

But expecting too much more was exactly the problem I had with the over hyping in the beginning. But people shouldn't have too much of a problem with it going down of being a pretty good shooter of this generation.
