Forums - Sales - Killzone 2 SALES are Very Disappointing (Just Realized)

Yeah overhyping is dangerous, still, they prob made a decent profit.

I'm not so sure about this, in a recent EA interview they stated they needed to sell more than 1.1 million units to break even on their annualized need for speed franchises. If this is true for a game that takes 1 year to make, has a pre-established engine and a relatively small team size how many copies would Killzone 2 have to sell with 4-5 years in the making, working on a new engine and a team of 100+. In the cost you also have to include Voice Actors and marketing budget. Just because ads are bad does not make them cheap.

This would mean that the game cost more to make than Uncharted... with a smaller dev team... and smaller dev cycle... I call shenanigans. I bet more technological advances are being made to the Uncharted engine than N4S's and Uncharted is adding multiplayer.

nik - so they claim the game was in development for 5 years... riiiiight... I'd love to see the numbers of how it went from 45 employees to more than they currently have employed now a year before they had 45 employees...

Easy.. 45 for the CG trailer for the E3.. real development 140 people.. last year of development 200... but he is the Director of GG.. but what does he know? And it's still 4 years...  he is  saying 140 people in 4 years.. that's his minimum people.. and in the last year it went up to 200..

Also when Sony bought GG from Media Republic they already had 100 people working there..
from the blog of Media Republic: http://www.molblog.nl/bericht/Media-Republic-verkoopt-Guerrilla-Games-aan-Sony/

"All 100 people from GG are transfered to Sony..."

And the bump from 140 to 200 people were extra people helping out.. most in the art department.. I'm a graphic designer and friends of mine have worked on KZ2 for a year..

The PS3 has generally poor software sales.

Well the PS3 version of CoD4 was helped by word of mouth big time. Killzone 2 on the other hand wasn't. Why? because even though the game had a high metacritics rating the replay value just wasn't there. People complained KZ2's class system was to easy to unlock( it took me 2 weeks to unlock every class). Then all the game modes were smack together and played through once (most people played TDM even when the game mode was something else) and the classes were unbalanced and then the auto aim complaints.

All that lend to bad word of mouth. People wanted a deep MP experience similar to CoD4 but they got a game that suffer from bad decisions( Short game modes, unbalanced classes, aiming) and a less than challenging class unlock system. The game just wasn't that deep MP wise and alot of people opted to stay with CoD4/WaW instead.

i actually think those are good sales, it's the fault of the people that overhyped the game

its probably because sony doesnt market their games at all. If it had had better advertising it would have sold better and i agree it definatly deserves to sell better than it has

Long Live SHIO!

I've posted very similar things and was dismissed as a troll.. by normal standards, KillZone 2 has sold extremely well but if you look at the production and promotion budgets for the game (which we don't know but can reasonably assume are astronomical) the game must be seen as a disappointment.

i love killzone 2, was playin it again yesterday actually

but hell yeh its below cod 4, and really it hasnt done enough to climb over it (online, i dont like cod 4s sp tho, so kz2 wins that, but online is key to me)

res 1, its better than, but that was only game to buy way back when so it took it a bit

Last year's game of the year turned out to be Silent Hill : Shattered Memories (online GOTY was COD 6).  This year's GOTY leader to me is Heavy Rain.

I'm fairly sure that Sony or Guerilla games released documents showing that it had passed 2 million by a pretty decent margin, its just another case of VGChartz having incomplete data.

After being out for a month the amount of time spent tracking a game goes down, and invariably so does the accuracy.

Give it another Christmas season... I believe it will do well.
