Well the PS3 version of CoD4 was helped by word of mouth big time. Killzone 2 on the other hand wasn't. Why? because even though the game had a high metacritics rating the replay value just wasn't there. People complained KZ2's class system was to easy to unlock( it took me 2 weeks to unlock every class). Then all the game modes were smack together and played through once (most people played TDM even when the game mode was something else) and the classes were unbalanced and then the auto aim complaints.
All that lend to bad word of mouth. People wanted a deep MP experience similar to CoD4 but they got a game that suffer from bad decisions( Short game modes, unbalanced classes, aiming) and a less than challenging class unlock system. The game just wasn't that deep MP wise and alot of people opted to stay with CoD4/WaW instead.
