Looking at the crap YV ads Sony have started putting on in th UK the PS3 wont sell crap loads lol it really is one crap ad it's hilarious

I concurr. They seem to have taken the "it probably does just about everything" and decided to throw it all into a 30 second advert again leaving you wondering what the hell that was all about. They should take a leaf out of the MS ads. The MS adverts are clean they focus on a message and they have numerous versions to reinforce the different messages. The only good bit about the PS3 advert is the end, I actually do not mean that as it sounds I literally mean the end when they show the console and the ribbon runs through it, that is the only time the advert makes any sense.

Found an old article about PS2 sales when the PS2 was reduced from $299 to $199.   This was mid May 2002. At that point the PS3 was on the market 2 years in Japan and 1.5 years in US and Europe.

Sony so far has shipped 30 million PlayStation 2 units worldwide and 7.9 million in the U.S.

A. Have a link? And I think you meant the PS2 was on the market for 2 years, not the PS3.

B. Ok, so what are we getting at here? If anything, that proves more of my point, the PS3 has been on the market for nearly three years and STILL hasn't seen anywhere near 30mill units shipped/sold.

The point is you are equating the PS3 price reduction to $299 to give the same results as the PS2 reduction to $199.  Not to mention PS2 was already established as the winner of the previous generation before the price reduction to $199.99.  The third parties were all ready dedicated to the PS2 as the lead console and more than willing to make PS2 exclusives with little encouragement.    The PS3 will never be in this position.

Its libraries that sell systems not a single game.

I called it in May already:

A PS3 Slim $299 in 2009 would increase sales by at least 50% and totally crush the X360.

I think that when considering similar prices, parents who want to get a system for kids will choose 360 due to a lower price point and essentiallyt he same library. The arguement for blu-ray and free wifi is really only applicable to adults, as what parent wants to give their kid $25 movies when they can give them the same movies for $10 and they (the kid) will never notice the difference. As for wifi, even as an adult, at the current standards and speeds, I would never use it over a cat 5 cable... anything to avoid the lag monster! Also, from an adults perspective, the actual games I want just simply are not on PS3 (Mass Effect and Halo), and there are no exclusives in my mind that compare otherwise. Using the PS3 as a media hub is a joke IMO, as the Xbox can stream music in game using the Zune services or Media Center Extender services, not to mention the IR port that is only on the 360 sure makes my $100 logitech Harmony remote kick that much more ass. Oh, and netflix FTW. For me, all of the above reasons are much greater than blu-ray and wifi and ps3 exclusives.

That's just what they suspect US demographic require (emphasis on the price drop) to sell there system.

Here's the UK's version incase your curious http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cy_YQV8EhYw it's completely different and isn't centered around the price drop. Infact in the UK I've never seen an advert so much so simply around the price of the product as the US PS3's advert.

NICE find...it really shuts down alot of the arguing points out there, and really moots the points by people trying to slam M$'s moves.  CGI ofcourse isn't in that catergory, and is rationale about it...even if I think he's off as to how PS3 vs 360 will go WW, but it's interesting to see how sales shape up this holiday season.  M$ isn't going bargin basement on trying to compete with the PS3, but they might take things down a notch next year, once they cut the cost on the console, with the new chipsets.

I'm pleased with this post heruamon, it's pretty fair and intelligent, even if we disagree in areas. THIS is how debates should go.....

I've been watching too many Obama clips or something...lol.
