I didn't mind the presentation at all. The game itself is what I didn't enjoy. Not nearly as fun as classic Mario games.

You played New Super Mario Bros. Wii?

Don 't know about him, but I did

OP: The 3D models allow them to be much more detailed in the animations than 2D feasibly could.  I say 'feasibly' becausethey technically 'could' draw enough sprites for running, single jumping, double jump, triple jump, long jump, spin attack, penguin suit, backflip, wall jump, flower suit, etc.  However, it's much easier to do it this way whenyou have so many varied animations.  It also looks fantastic anyway, so I don't see where you're going with this.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

I thought 2.5D was "isometric" stuff, like Flickie's Island and Equinox. So now it's all about 3D tricks in 2D games such as late 90's Capcom / SNK fighters?

Oh how times have changed.

FYI, Isometric view was sometimes called 3/4 view.

I have a bigger problem with the word "2.5D" than I do with "JRPG"

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

@Jumpin

Me too, i use it because it has sort of a meaning in computer graphics (i work a lot with those), but all my life i've understood that there's no 0.5 dimension, 1 dimension is a line (not a graphical line, but a line in its definition), 2 dimensions is a surface and 3 dimensions are the objects, otherwise known as the space, according to general relativity the 4th dimension is time, and if we follow the string theory (or M-theory or LQG) we are talking about even more dimensions, but i've never heard about a 0.5 dimension in physics...

That is what 2.5D is, 2D sprites and 2D background used in a way to give the impression of a 3D world (generally done with an isometric view).

I would call NSMBW a sidescroller using 3D models.
