Forums - Microsoft - WiFi delay for online gaming?

Only thing you should really have to consider before going to Wifi is distance and obstacles. I have ~2 walls between my router and systems and about 50ft. It works perfectly fine. Make sure whatever you buy has long enough range and there aren't large metal objects in the way.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

just to add, my router is kept upstairs in pc room, i bought the cheapest netgear router thats designed to use in more or less same room. but my ps3 is downstairs in front room.

and i still get a high wireless connection %. so i think you will be ok, if unsure get a router with a larger range to be on safe side.

...not much time to post anymore, used to be awesome on here really good fond memories from VGchartz...

PSN: Skeeuk - XBL: SkeeUK - PC: Skeeuk

really miss the VGCHARTZ of 2008 - 2013...

i think there is a big difference, i used my wifi on my ps3 when i had to, i did not see a difference whenn i was gaming online , that was fine, i was just when doing downloads, on demos, etc.  i have never used wifi on my 360, personally another 100 dollors is crazy. only if i really had no other way. somtimes that is the case. i like hardwire better, so if you can use a wire do that, if not somthing is better then nothing

Same here. Downloads were extremely slow on my PS3 via Wi-Fi, even though the PS3 is in the next room to where the router is, literally 6 feet apart. When I switched to ethernet, the download speeds increased a lot.

Well I used Wifi for my PC and noticed the delay and switched to power plugs and have not seen any since. I do not believe I fall into the super human category but latency is king in a FPS game and any advantage given away will punish.

The only way to tell if you will benefit is to try Wireless and Wired. The other issue is how many people live near you. Whereas this was not an issue when I first went Wifi I fired up search a network the other day and the thing was off the scale so popularity of Wifi locally will also be a factor.

I don't get where Microsoft comes off charging $100.00 for WiFi either. That is why I am just going to get a bridge.

depends on your setup. If you have a good connection the delay should not be noticeable. I use WiFi and I've never had a problem with lag other than general network lag that is out of my control.

Unless you have superhuman senses and can notice that 1ns delay.

I think the difference is nowhere near that small nordlead. Have you tried pinging your router from a laptop using wireless, and compare to the ping times of a computer plugged to the router via Ethernet?

In my case pinging the router from Ethernet results in constant < 1 ms latency, while wireless gives something with tens of ms, or sometimes more than 100 ms (varying widely). That adds a significant delay, easily doubling the ping time to the game server.

That said, I play with the Wii using wireless for convenience, and it's good enough for the games I play online (mostly Mario Kart Wii and GH).

^^ I may have been partly exaggerating

Either way, I haven't had a laptop in a long time, but the last time I pinged it we were talking in the 10's ms range, which is hardly noticeable at all. It's like the person who claims they can tell the difference between a game running 60fps and 59fps.

Quality of connection for online gaming would go something like this: Direct connect to modem > direct connect to router > Wifi connect to router.

How bad the degradation between the three levels depends on a ton of things, in my house, I'd say the biggest difference is between the first two, with negligible differences between the latter two.

If I'm in for a night of Gears 2, I direct connect to modem everytime.
