I understand what you are saying...but at $299....you might as well get a PS3...it is an entertainment console (according to Sony)...so it is designed to play loads of Blu Rays

I know it will wear down the player with the amount of movies I watch.

No one knows how long a optical disc player lasts. Only time will tell. My Denon CD player is 21 years old, it still works and is still used several hours a day. During the same time period all relatives and friends - who use their CD players rarely compared to me - had to buy 2 or 3 new ones.

So why would watching many movies on PS3 automatically shorten its lifetime? (And even if it theoretically does, I assume it will still work for several years).

It's just the way I am going to approach it. Wear and tear happens. I want my gaming consoles specifically for gaming.

So you are saying that if you bought a mobile phone, you would only use it specifically for calls? You will not get an answer, because you don't want to compromise.

Okay, I understand your reasoning (I'm a purist myself), but why spend $500 on a stand-alone BD player then?

Many of the currently best stand-alone BD players are cheaper than $500 according to reviews, e.g.

It doesn't have to be $500.00, I have just seen a real dropoff in quality at the lower price points. I'll check those out.

Not wanting to use a PS3 is refusing to compromise?

The cheap 100 dollar ones are about as reliable as the $500+ ones. The only thing they're really missing is a name brand attached.

SSJ mentions some really sweet $500 dollar blu-ray play in that $99 thread. Too lazy to go back for a link though.

Buy a PS3, it's a no brainer, and is the best Blu-ray player

If all you want to do is watch movies on it then so be it, a lot of people do that, but I HIGHLY dought watching a lot of hours of movies is going to hurt the consoles lifespan...I mean that's what it was made for....

ure confusing lol
