Forums - Gaming - Why does the XBox 360 online service have a monthly fee?

Compare the alternatives:

Windows, Linux, and Mac users have many free servers they can play multiplayer online games on.

Playstation 3 is another console and all of its multiplayer servers are free.

Why does Microsoft charge a monthly fee when all their competition, even themselves with the Windows platform, are free?

It doesn't make any sense.

Just curious, why don't you mention the WII?

Also, why not? They make money.

Because getting more money is the smart thing to do, correct?
The other platforms used their free services as a way to lure in players. Make sense?

Sorry, I am not too familiar with the Wii's online multiplayer. But yes, that is another example of a free, popular platform for online gaming.

No, it doesn't make sense. Maybe if there was a blockbuster 360 exclusive that had an online component maybe then it would make sense to have people pay a monthly fee for that one game, but outside of that, how can you restrict access to all online gaming if you do not pay an online fee?

Yes it makes sense. Online fee = MONEY! Every company loves money. Good question, simple answer.

I didn't think anyone didn't know about Halo...

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

Someone was unaware of Halo?
