Because they use the extra income to better their online service. If you shop around just a little, you can get the service for under .10 cents a day. Thats really horrible isn't it? You get what you pay for.

How long did you have to wait for Marvel Vs Capcom 2 on PSN? Did TNMT remake come out yet on PSN? Can you talk to people who play other games? Well its free so you can't blame them...

And all that PC/lynux argument stuff is lame...connecting to some dudes server who implements cheats and rapes you in counterstrike VS connecting to a compelte network service like xbox live has no difference and both should cost the same...riiight.

I'm not sure why XboxLive online gaming isn't free (everything but the gaming is free, however). I haven't really thought about it because no one on VGChartz has ever discussed this before.

You can't put a price on awesomeness..also MS offers Voice messages,Party Chat,Private Chat,Private Party Chat, Cross game chat, across many countries...in NA...it's really cheap for 50 dollars a year to talk internationally and long distance...Which is the the reason why PSN has none of these outside of in game chat...Sony would not be able to afford to not charge people...XBOX LIVE Gold has a price tag for a reason....it's not cheap to have dedicated Voice chat options..

Initially, probably to soften the blow from the losses they took on the original Xbox. Then they found out people were willing to pay for it (via Halo, mostly) and haven't looked back since.
