Cheaper BR players often have compatibility problems with newer BR movies(some don't even have firmware updates, or the ability to go online), and almost always "freeze" as in, stop motion for upwards of 6 seconds as often as ever 30 minutes. Again, the upscaling features of each BR player differ vastly in quality as well as available outputs.

A BR player isn't like an HDMI cord. The ones that cost 500 dollars, cost 500 dollars for a reason, and the ones that cost 100 dollars, cost 100 dollars because they suck.

I'm not embellishing this. Don't waste your money.

And the ones that cost $300 are still the best on the market

I'm sure you are refering to the PS3, but for those that want a real remote and no fan noise in a simple package that uses little power they should get the Sony BDP-s560 which retails for $350, but can be found cheaper. It is essentially the equivilent of the PS3 in terms of quality (a little slower on the load times) and it has Wifi so you can use BDLive easily.

Theres a $150ish Blu-Ray Vizio player that has Blu-Ray Live and you can update the firmware I believe. But if you want games obviously the PS3 is still the way to go.

Edit: It's $188 and a Wal-Mart exclusive. Currently that's a bit high I rather buy a PS3 at that price point, but I believe they will drop a bit thanks to the PS3 price cut.

That player has freezing and compatibility issues, or so I hear. Your best bet it to go Panasonic or Sammy, at around 300+, though if you are going to spend that much, the PS3 is far superior and doesn't "require" you to play games.

Just...stand alone BR players suck. They aren't worth the price. The best ones should be 100 bucks, considering the best one ever made, with tons more functionality than its competitors is 299, much cheaper than the "high end" models.

The PS3 has the fastest menu, every feature, and plays Playstation games just in case you're ever interested.

WTF standalone BR, I thought I knew ye.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

This is awesome, now if only Sony/Panasonic/etc drop their prices too for the holidays!

wont happen, those Magnavox players are Blu-ray profile 1.1, Sony and the higher priced ones are Bu-ray profile 2.0.

The new PS3 phats have almost no fan noise, imo. :P

I certainly can't hear mine.

Then again, I've modded some external cooling from Newegg, so mine runs quiet like mouse.

Not everyone wants to lose money on products they sell, so of course the stand-alone players look expensive.

what is MAGNAVOX? never heard of them but this price will be the price where blu ray can accelerate the adoption rate.

never heard of magnavox, damn they used to make bad ass TVs and VCRs matter of fact i think my mothers tv/vcr that are from 1982 have better quality then todays tvs. thing kicked the hell out of the TVs bought years later to replace it. its a 28 inch weights a ton.... the VCR is also massive, but even had composite back then... thing is probably bullet proof

come play minecraft @  mcg.hansrotech.com

minecraft name: hansrotec

XBL name: Goddog

I haven't heard of issues with the Vizio but it wouldn't surprise me. Their first run TV's were crap and not until 4+ years ago did they finally get product quality right on their TVs. Atleast that's the opinion around me but I love my two Vizio tvs.

Anyways redbox for a dollar is enough for me.

It's just that simple.

Actually, if someone wants one of the best Blu-ray palyers on the market, they just have to spend $400. The PS3 is complete and utter trash compared to Oppo Digital's player. Its feature set is equivilent to the $4000 Blu-ray players for a tenth of the price.

Well, since it's equivalent in terms of BD playback I can see why you'd recommend it. But why not pay $50 less and get a multimedia device that's capable of much more (eg. Gaming, web browsing)? Noise can be a problem, but most home theatres are never quiet enough to even hear PS3s over their surround systems.

Edit: @ ssj12: That site you linked to says $500, or am I looking at the wrong player?
