Forums - Microsoft - Further reason to believe the 360's sales are inflated due to RROD.

http://www.gorillajumpers.com/articles/xbox_failure.htm

Here's a guy who really seems to like the 360.  No reason to assume he isn't telling the truth or has any sort of anit-Microsoft bias.  Acouple of little sentences from him convince me further that the 360's sales numbers are inflated by multiple purchases by the same person to replace defective consoles.

"I have had two 360's fail on me and am currently working on my third one. When my third one dies and if the Game Informer survey is any indication, it will. I will run right out and buy my fourth 360 without hesistation."

I have seen this kind of anecdotal evidence in blog after blog and message board after message board.  To what extent the numbers are inflated is up for debate (probably difficult or impossible to prove), but clearly there are people who have bought multiple consoles.  I believe the difference in the number of unique users of the PS3 and 360 is much smaller than the pure sales numbers would have us believe.

On a site like this based on sales numbers, I think this is a subject that needs to be discussed from time to time...in a civilized manner of course.  :)

Keep this in mind when reading what I type...

I've been gaming longer than many of you have been alive.

Wow. That makes the attach ratio even more impressive. Thanks for bringing this irrefutable proof to our attention.

It should also be noted that last generation, each console really sold fairly equally, between 20-30 million. The PS2's other 110 million in sales comes from replacement consoles.

Haha...got to love sarcastic mods.

I think its obvious that a lot of 360's bought have been replacements.

But then again... the same can be said for probably any console.

That one guy had 3 PS3s, so I surmise that there are actually only 8 million PS3 owners.

Lol. I love the sarcasm in this thread. The man brings up an entirely fair point. Sure all consoles fail at one time or another, I've seen PS3's failure between 2% and 10%(By Game Informer).. Yet I've seen Xbox 360 failure rate between 33% and 53%(by Game Informer). This statistics cannot be denied, to do so would show true fanboyism. I surmise that the difference between unique PS3 and Xbox 360 owners in smaller than thought, but not incredibly smaller, maybe 7 mil difference instead of 8 mil? And yes, this does prove that the attachment rate on the 360 is higher than the PS3.

I surmise

Too late. I have already surmised in this thread. Go surmise elsewhere.

It's a topic with no end. We can't surmise what kind of effect this has on sales. Even if it is significant, it's still all sales. The only thing it changes is how impressive the 360's attach ratio is, but without solid numbers we'll never know how much. Other than that tidbit, there's little reason to discuss it. Sales are what they are for whatever reason. We'll never get an answer on any effect this has had. So sure, it's a fair point, but what does it actually serve to discuss it?

Like badgenome just mentioned though, the same blogger has gone through 3 PS3's also. What do we do with that bit of info?

Use logic man. Look at which ones sells more games. Also Xbox 360 has a piracy issue...PS3 doesn't. Yet xbox does move about 20-30% more software every week.

Oh, I was talking about this guy.
