| MDMAniac said: Wanna proof? New model of PS3, `the Slim`, now supports another snobby and expensive gimmicks, namely Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. Before fanboys popping up and crying out of loud how wonderfull these features are, consider the point: Not only it requires very expensive equipment in your room, which 99.9% of installbase don't have, also if it were not for these sunshine techs, PS3 Slim might cost another 20$ or even 30$ less. I bet everyone would be more than happy to trade-off trendy logos from front panel for cheaper console. The inclusion of various hi-tech gimicks into PS3 road map totally unneccessary for fun & healthy gaming is exactly the reason why PS3 costs an arm and a leg, and why it's eventually falling. Such `hi-tech` approach infected Sony beyond any measure. For example one could see the same pattern even in their game line-up, where everything seems to spin about top notch video/audio effects and totally overshooting that. Take KZ2, bleak and generic FPS promoted as `gaming icon`, and you know what I mean. |
Ok, can I know where did you take the "$20 or even $30 less" numbers from? Because while the "phat" models converted Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD to an uncompressed PCM stream in software, the slim one can bitstream it directly to your mixer.
There's no improved sound quality, mind you, because the PCM stream contained all the uncompressed digital data, so it's hardly something Sony had to add because they have a tech fever.
It's just that the newer HDMI chips have this feature for free. And seriously, the chip probably costs a couple bucks.

Hes taking the extra $25 it costs for the PS3 slim to "stand up to the Xbox 360", I.E. the console stand!
Its an important feature! Otherwise you'd have to bend down further and risk a costly back injury.
Tease.
^that actually makes more sense... Plus consider that by being matte black instead of shiny black it will absorb more of your precious room light. Electrical bills will soar.
Someone is really jealous of Killzone 2

PS3 old one support it's, but now it does more in hardware.

Videogame forums appear to be a breeding ground for ignorance. Sometimes it is amusing, but other times I find myself having to pick my jaw up from the floor. This is one of those times. This functionality won't cost $30 per unit. You would have been much closer if you had said 30 cents.
By your reckoning, if the PS3 slim sold 10m units, Sony would pay $300m for the licensing of 2 audio codecs. Is that honestly what you are suggesting?
Just to clarify: $300m would be more than double Dolby's annual net income!
I do agree with you on one thing, though: TrueHD suport won't make much of a difference, if any. The fat PS3 can already process uncompressed audio, so the only real difference is that high-end enthusiasts will see the TrueHD light on their receivers come on.
That said, I have already seen people on a number of forums (Blu-Ray ones in particular) claiming that they would only buy a slim if it supports Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. Other than BC, this appears to be the feature most coveted by forum junkies. And by anyody's calculations it is much, much cheaper to implement.
Anybody's but yours, that is.

I prefer the PS3 Slim is ugly criticisim. It seems like people are grasping at straws now. Sony drops the price $100 and actually adds hardware based capability and that is a negative? No, just go back to the ugly argument, that actually seemed to have some traction.
Thanks for the input, Jeff.
here's a better question how many games/movies will use Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio? NONE, but hey we can all jerk off thinking about feature we not only can't use without spending another 500-600$ for simple audio receiver and 50-70$ for special cables that support that feature. theen you have to fork another 600-900$ for decent speaker system that supports 7.1 channels.
so bacically you have to fork at least 1200$ just to have ability to use it, but hey NO ONE ACTUALLY SUPPORTS IT and yet they couldn't keep atleast 4 usb ports and card reader.
