Videogame forums appear to be a breeding ground for ignorance. Sometimes it is amusing, but other times I find myself having to pick my jaw up from the floor. This is one of those times. This functionality won't cost $30 per unit. You would have been much closer if you had said 30 cents.
By your reckoning, if the PS3 slim sold 10m units, Sony would pay $300m for the licensing of 2 audio codecs. Is that honestly what you are suggesting?
Just to clarify: $300m would be more than double Dolby's annual net income!
I do agree with you on one thing, though: TrueHD suport won't make much of a difference, if any. The fat PS3 can already process uncompressed audio, so the only real difference is that high-end enthusiasts will see the TrueHD light on their receivers come on.
That said, I have already seen people on a number of forums (Blu-Ray ones in particular) claiming that they would only buy a slim if it supports Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. Other than BC, this appears to be the feature most coveted by forum junkies. And by anyody's calculations it is much, much cheaper to implement.
Anybody's but yours, that is.
