Everyone has been sending me this video from Invisible Walls. Around 12:50, it becomes a complete hate-fest on the Wii.
Regardless of one’s opinion, there are many facts stated in there that are completely wrong. For example, Punch-Out’s sales did not ‘tank’. Iwata was even praising the Punch-Out’s sales in an Iwata Asks interview.
It is bizarre how a little white game console can attract so much hate. The hate might be understandable if the Wii was stealing all the third party games (it isn’t) or was taking sales from the HD Twins (it isn’t). Wii isn’t even taking sales away from the PS2!
Note how so much of the hate is directed not at the Wii, itself, but at the Wii’s customers. They are literally attacking the players themselves. What did these players do to the hardcore? Nothing.
At one point, they attack the Blue Ocean Strategy which made my eyebrows shoot up. Good job attacking a business book.
Much of the video seemed staged as if they were intentionally trolling for hits. One emailer noted how they didn’t complain about motion controls. I guess after motion plus, they can’t any longer especially with Sony to release their own motion plus.
A comment at the GoNintendo post on it made me laugh:
While watching this, I couldn’t help but notice that the Wii footage looked more fun to me (apart from the Carnival Games bit) than any of the HD realistic stuff. What ever happened to games being games, not interactive games emulating real life?
And LOL at these guys saying the Wii will die in the next 12 months. Are they serious??
The little in-game footage of some generic action shooter HD game looked like it controlled horribly. Robotic movements look stupid. IR aiming FTW.
The Wii hatred, declaring Nintendo “doomed”, and announcing that Wii will be ‘destroyed’ in 12 months isn’t too interesting or new to me. We’ve been hearing this since the Wii was released.
What IS interesting are all these people, appearing from nowhere, defending the indefensible hatred. While some are clearly die-in-the-wool fans of the HD Twins, I do wonder how many are Viral Messengers. This is a big reason why I don’t trust comments or message forums anymore. It just feels like some marketing arm is trying to move the public debate. Imagine this as an example:
*Unicorns are on Mars.*

Commentator One: That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard! Unicorns aren’t on Mars!
Commentator Two: Have you ever been on Mars? No? I didn’t think so. Maybe you should know what you are talking about before you start posting.
Commentator One: Are you insane? There are no unicorns on Mars!
Commentator Two: Stop trying to protect the Horse Industry. They just don’t want you to know that unicorns are on Mars. And when was the last time the Horse Industry told you the truth?
Commentator One: You are insane! Horse Industry?
Commentator Two: That’s right! I had hopes you’d eventually grow up.
As absurd as is the above, it matches what we are hearing now.
*Wii is doomed. Console will be DESTROYED in 12 months.*

Commentator One: That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. Wii won’t be destroyed in 12 months. What is this guy smoking?
Commentator Two: You know everything that was said was the truth. Perhaps you should watch everything that was being said before you post. Stop being a Nintendo apologist.
Commentator One: Are you insane? Everything that was said there was simply not true.
Commentator Two: Stop being the Nintendo Fanboy. When was the last time Nintendo did anything for you? We all know what was said is true. Stop trying to deny it.
Commentator One: I admit the Wii has problems, but Nintendo is not doomed.
Commentator Two: I knew you’d grow up and see reason. We all know what was said was the truth.
Usually when there are product announcements is when viral messengers begin making their rounds to make sure that the product is *positioned correctly* in the online discussion. Around E3, especially after, is when so many viral messengers tend to appear. Natal is a great example of this phenomenon. So many virals came out and tried to pump Natal hard, declaring it the best thing since sliced bread, and note how they vanished just as quickly as they appeared.
Anyway, all this ‘hardcore hate’ for the Wii is good for my upcoming article. In it, the hardcore are made to say outrageous things, things slightly less outrageous then what you heard in that video. I thought I was going over the top with the hardcore, but I see now that is impossible.
