Forums - Sony - Penny Arcade on the PS3 slim

wth is this poetry class?

Around the Network

I just so happen to own a PS3 but, as many of you know, I am not really a fan...

However, this is a great deal - 299 for wifi, bluray, a controller with a built-in battery. I might have to stop hating on my own console.

I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.

It's been quite obvious Microsoft has a lot of 'friends' in the media biz, Cnet, Forbes, and now this.  You can expect to hear all good things about windows 7 when it launches this fall, especially from Cnet (we have haven't we so far.)

When i loaded up Google news today,  The two stories representing the PS3 slim were one about how you should choose a blu-ray laptop over a ps3(HUH??), and another saying it was too little too late for sony.  None of the top stories actually gave a fair representation of what Sony presented or what the REAL NEWS STORY they were supposed to be covering was.  It was clear to me they had succeeded in dampening the excitement and media impact on the announcement.  For crying out loud Sony announced a $299 PS3 and a redesigned slim model, how is that a negative?

Nobody says it is negative. But if you consider the past success of the playsation brand, nobody would have imagined that they would need to create a slim version, so early,to try to catch up.

Inevitably, this is conflicting with other trends on the market (see also the fight between the PSP and the iPhone).

early? slim version always come at the third or fourth year.

Really ?

Well, it seems maybe early to me due to the 10 years plan.

PSone released 6 years after it's Playstation launch in 1994. PS2 Slim Launched 4 years after PS2. PSP slim came 3 years after launch.

From the trend given the time between launch and slim is getting shorter. But "always" is far from truth, typically when things fall in a sales rut Sony releases the slim to stimulate sales again, much like Nintendo with it's colors.

Those damn dirty North Americans.

And Gabe and Tycho were just on 1 vs. 100 a week or so ago. Coincidence!? I think not! Microsoft undoubtedly filled their pockets with a king's ransom in Allards.

Over 100 Million consoles have been sold so far this generation representing roughly 60% of the console sales that were achieved last generation and it is pretty safe to say that we're close to (or have passed) the point where half of all consoles sold this generation will have been sold. Being that 80% of consoles sold last generation cost $200 or less, and the PS3 lacks the exclusive content or popularity of the PS2 to drive sales at $300, I think it is fair to say that reporters and analysts have overstated the impact that the slim will have.

I'm willing to bet there is a greater increase of console sales this gen than there was last gen from the gen before. Also, only one console so far is at the price sweet spot... and it ain't doing too hot. I'd like to see how a PS3 and Wii can sell at the same price. Also, only one console last gen went for longer then 5 (?) years... This gen all three will be doing that... basically what I'm saying is, last gen means shit in this situation.

I think you are right on this one. I think the Wii changed the game as far as expected total sales go.

The Wii's popularity explosion put the console in the hands of many who would not even have considered a video game machine last few generations. Plus I believe many single console owners became multi console owners just for the Wii (ex: if you only owned an xbox/ps2/gamecube last gen you may now own a 360/wii or PS3/wii this gen)

This is also why MS and Sony are trying to add casual/family friendly things to their machines. They probably are not scared of the Wii (as they keep stating). Its more like they want to set up a system that can do everything that the Wii/360 or Wii/PS3 can do. That way the potential for having one machine that caters to casual/hardcore and is HD could cause people with both to box up the Wii and purchase all software for their box instead.

Well, they had to drop the price at some point.
