Forums - Nintendo - Developers 'Nervous' About Making Wii Games

Also with the announcement that Monster Hunter 3 will be a Wii exclusive, I don't think Nintendo are worried about anything. If anyone is worried about their success in Japan right now, it's Sony and Microsoft. It's all about userbase. Once Nintendo's userbase hits 30 million globally, it will be impossible to ignore it.

You would think that now would be the time they would want to be investing in Wii. It is slowing down. Finally. After 11 months. I still can't find a Wii around my local area. I am wanting to buy a second one so I can have one downstairs for when Guitar Hero 3 comes out. So far. No luck. Imagine what the guys at Factor 5 are feeling. Lair was very expensive, and very labor intensive. Lair chunked. If a Wii game goes in the tank, the loss is not as steep. The development costs are significantly less. These days, developers in general are nervous due to the investment you have to make in creating games. Every game that comes out is a potential loser. Then again, every game is a potential blockbuster too. Who would have thought Ravin Rabids would have been big? Who could have known that Ninja Bread Man would sell as well as it has? Then you look at Manhunt 2. Who knows whats in store for that game.

@llewdebkram Your son also had a PSP, right?

Personally, I may-MAY- pick up a PSP for Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep. I'm a KH nut.

Yes, the biggest waste of money ever.

One game bought which was GTA and he instantly lost interest.

He's 14 now and much prefers playing PC games as he has a gaming PC.

If you think the psp is a waste of money then I think the ds is a waste of money :D

Im 15 and I prefer playing GTA portably on th psp, than on the xbox or ps2.

There are 5 games I'm watching on Wii that should be very telling for the prospects of 3rd party companies. 1) Guitar Hero 3 2) Manhunt 2 3) Nights 4) Soul Calibur Legends 5) King Story/De blob/ Zack & Wiki (abstract/niche titles) I think Manhunt 2 is most important to companies like Capcom, Take Two, Konami who make big titles aimed at older audiences. Niche titles are important to Majesco, Atlus, Koei. Legends is important to companies like Square-Enix, Capcom, Namco, EA, etc - companies who want to know if decently made 'side' games will see in Japan or the West. Guitar Hero 3 sales will be indicative of where the huge casual ddr/karaoke/singstar PS2 audience is moving. If all five of these types of title bomb, I think Wii is in quite a bit of trouble. But I expect Nights to do decent numbers in both the USA and Japan (100k to 300k in each), and I think Legends could approach 1 million units worldwide if it was recieved well (Soul Calibur 2 sold over a million copies on GC and PS2 - Wii seems to be tapping segments of both audiences). The niche titles should be hit and miss - good games will be fine sales wise I think (Trauma Center 2) while bad niche titles will fail worse than on other consoles. Manhunt 2 sales are going to be hard to guage since it won't be released worldwide (censorship issues) - but I think it could do RE4-Wii like numbers. That leaves Guitar Hero 3 for Wii. This is the most important test. I expect it to very very well (2.0 million+ worldwide) or to bomb (under 400k). If Guitar Hero does well, I think you'll see increased support from western developers for their more innovative titles, while the standard fare will continue to populate 360 and PS3 systems.

If they are good games that get good reviews and are passed on by word of  mouth they will sell.

RE4 is all of those and is going to make it to a million.

Maybe it's just that a lot of Wii owners are more discerning and don't just buy any old rubbish.

you guys are calling developers lazy? I thought you guys always go after the PS3 fans for saying this?

Surely your opinion about the DS being good or bad was formed before I said the PSP was a waste of money.

For me spending £200 on the PSP for my son to only play 1 game, never touch it for months and then a year later sell it was a waste of money.

I think the success of the Wii makes it possible that some 3rd parties, who are not able to or willing to make quality games for a Nintendo console, will self destruct. From what we have seen so far what every publisher has released and/or is planning for the near future in terms of Wii support, I can't say that I would miss any of the publishers who don't take the Wii serious yet.

I don't forsee that as happening.  Provided the Wii can maintain its momentum, it's not really a "if" the developers/publishers move over to it rather it will be a "when."  Those who take longer to switch may suffer for it, but when it becomes of matter of making money or not making money, I think they will choose the former.

Well the Wii is based on an easy architecture. Even the TEVs are easy once you get used to them. The PS2's Emotion Engine wasn't even that hard once developers got used to it.

Yet I do admit that if developers hold out their AAA games, to get a better userbase for the PS3, then they should give some other games to help the userbase grow. The system can still do decent games without the SPEs.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs

Nintendo is just holding on to their stock for consoles for massive holiday sales. Also nothing major has been released in Japan last month.
