SNo doubt that a Slim for 299 dollars is the deal that everyone has been waiting to come.

But with a slice of 100 dollar on all current units and a new modell at 100 dollar less, how long until they actually will have a fiscal year with black numbers?

It has been red for 3 years now and with this move the forth year is to come.

My guess is they turn black FY2012.

So on a yearly basis? Definitely not FY10 (current year), the red ink from the $299 will still be present. FY11 will be close, but with that being the year that the PS2 goes away, I think there will still be a bit of red, so I'm going to say FY2012.

That would require them making money now. No doubt that current with 100 dollar off will burn deep wholes and a slim will sell with loss at least for the first 6 months.

Sony will go into the black when they release the PS4 at a price point that lets them make a profit.

I think they will make a lot of money during this holiday season.

It has long been my belief that Sony never expected to make much money from the PS3. The PS3 was only meant to lay the groundwork for not only Blu-ray, but future Sony videogame hardware profitability. I expect the next Playstation and maybe even the one after that to utilize multiple Cell processors chained together. The cost will be very little. The PS3 was/is the big outlay of cash necessary to pave the way for the future.

I think they will turn a unit profit 2010 holiday season.

I doubt they will ever turn a profit this generation.

With developement costs and a current estimated 2 billion dollar loss on consoles this far it seems they would need to sell close to 200 million PS3's to break even.

Not only is the PS3 getting a big price cut, but the PS2 is still declining... At the rate they're doing price cuts, I hardly see them turning a profit anytime soon. Maybe towards the end of the generation or in the next one.

Unfortunately Sony now mixes SCE's results with Vaio and Walkman...
