Is RE history? 'cause that's where I learned it. And they touched down on the Catholic rch a bit and the history of it but they didn't touch on the beliefs like they did for the other religions

R.E. is religious education, it's a humanities subject in Britain and is taught alongside the two other humanities subjects which are Geography and History. I would imagine that in your case then History is equivalent to Britains humanities subjects and thus US history encompasses both religious education and geography too.

there is no RE in US...

EDIT: Nevermind... been out of school for so long. It would be Social Studies and it is considered a history class.

It proved more effective back in the day when God was more accepted by society. Since then, he's been taken out of the schools, most of the justice system, and rejected by society. I guess to most people now, the Bible is just another book. I'm not picking on anybody, but that's how it seems to me.

Sad, but true

It's true but not sad. God shouldn't be in schools, or in our justice system, or anywhere in our government. Because if he is then there is the argument of who's god do you put into the school system? Which god is the supreme court looking too? What if it's not your god? Would you want him in the schools, in the courts, in the government then? The fact of the matter is there are tens of millions of people who are not christians in america, so why should christ be in a government run school?

Christians want religious freedom, but many (not all) of them only mean "religious freedom for christians" when they say that. The instant the government espouses a certain religion, then that religious freedom is being taken from all those who worship differently. A secular government is the only way to have true religious freedom. So no, it's not sad that god has been taken out of the schools, and the justice system, it's in everyone's best interest that it is. And go look at some statistics, society in the US has not rejected god. Nearly half of the US thinks the earth is less than 10,000 years old, and even more than that think god created all life on earth pretty much as you see it now. The secularizing of government systems is in no way indicative of the US's view of god and the bible.

This reminds me of this picture...

Would be funny if it were accurate. Aren't Muslims over 1.1 billion? They're close to half if not more of Chrisitians?

The context of the graph is to represent the united states. I just realised the context is not stated on this one but there are many variations of this graph. I guess the context of the graph was left out due to artistic lisence.

I see.

I guess that would make more sense.

That's funny guys... I distinctly remmeber learning about Muslim and Hindu in my 7th grade history class.... And I sat wondering... "Why can they teach about this shit and evolution... but not creationalism?"

The question is, did they teach you that Islam was true? Did they teach you that you should obey the vedas, and explain what each hindu god is contributing to the world? Then why should they teach creationism?

They taught what they believed...

Did they teach you that the beliefs of Hindus and Muslims were a scientific theory with supposedly (and shaky) evidence based reasoning? No? Exactly why Creationism has no place in a SCIENCE lesson. Thats the main argument. Teach it all you want in Religious Studies, but keep non-science out of the lab/science classroom.

Even science in general (or the belief in evolution and the "BIG BANG THEORY") is just a bunch of shaky and unproven evidence based reasoning....

Science in general? Are you being sarcastic? We're talking about the same science that allows us to fly around the world in mere hours. The same science that ensures we have drugs and anti-biotics for what were some of the most devestating diseases? The same science that gives us the computers and consoles we use to play the games that most of us write about on these forums? By shaky and unproven you mean that its assumed correct until disproven? This means that unlike religious viewpoints its always open to new evidence.

Last warning before I start handing out real warnings.

This topic is not about science - it is about bibles for swearing in and to a lesser extent separation of church and state.

If you want to discuss science please make a new thread - believe me I'm happy to debate those things with you. But this is not the right thread for it.  Please respect the original topic of the thread.

Edit - In fairness any post timestamped 5 minutes after this one will be under effect of this verbal warning.

Sorry I mostly meant the science of evolution, creation, things which cannot be proven.  I did not mean to imply things such as basic science, biology, things which are tangible and can be proven.

To be fair I don't think the OP really has much to discuss about because as far as I know (In the US at least) they just have you raise your right hand now. I think if you request a bible then they'll give you one.

Do you think a scientific theory is based on unmeasurable ideas that scientists come up with whilst they are drunk?

OT:

I think the subject is moot anyway because it is a rare occasion that a non-faith based government make their residents swear on a bible anyway. I knwo the US don't do it anymore anyway.

Believe me there is plenty to discuss on the issue seperation of church and state - something the OP brought up.

Either way it makes far more sense to provide both discussions a format than it does to squash one for the sake of the other.  I fully encourage those interested in that discussion to make a new thread - it is very easy to do and I'm quite sure it will mushroom into a massive thread (they usually do - which is why I didn't want such a massive and heated topic possibly squashing this one).
