Forums - Gaming - Media Manipulation : The "BULLSHOT" Phenomenon. Well worth reading.

The funny thing is, you posted this and then went over to the Mass Effect 2 graphics thread and joined in a graphics war, comparing Uncharted 2 bullshots to Mass Effect 2 bullshots.

Rule of thumb: if it's a screenshot being released by the developer/publisher/press, then it's almost certainly a bullshot.

To use the U2 versus ME2 bullshot war as an example, the Mass Effect 2 pic you showed was very obviously a bullshot (or else was from the PC version), because there was no aliasing on the character model at all, whereas - from looking at Mass Effect 1 - we know that in reality there'll be loads.

Looky at this Mass Effect 1 shot, after all:

Doesn't look like any of the press-released screenshots we've seen of Mass Effect, does it? That's because it's direct feed, and not a bullshot, and as such the aliasing isn't hidden. The texture quality also takes a hit, as you can see.

Not me, I rarely get turned on by 1337 graphix

Don't be bashful. You like a good figure as much as anyone... Day one Uncharted 2 eh?

If this article has taught me anything it's that if I buy Uncharted 2 Drake's buns will pale in comparison to the screenshots, so no thanks

What, you're afraid you won't get whats advertised when you unwrap the package?

Tease.

yep the resolution of PSP does NOT allow jaggies to be removed. It will have to be be insanely high resolution (maybe Quad-Quad HDTV) to remove jaggies completely. A clever mix of anit-aliasing and higher resolution can mask this "most" of the times. People who believe those screen shots from PSP need to read more about how an image is created/displayed on the screen.

Yeah! in fact they havn't even MADE his buns, just ... jeans ...

I'd be mightily dissapointed

I like how a word from Penny Arcade has become so popular in the gaming media.

Of course that isn't GT PSP in game footage, we all knew that, but those you tube videos show it well

Screenshots are never really representative of the actual game, game videos are generally more representative, but of course even then they can be pre-rendered.... You can never really tell how a game is going to look until you play it yourself

Thats ok, you can always stuff some voxels into his pants. That'll give the man some substance!

Wait... So the jeans just have a magical arse crease in them, theres no arse there at all?!?

Tease.

The GT5 pic posted by Selnor aka the biggest Gran Turismo fanboy evar is indeed the mother of all bullshots. It's actually a GT5 model car on a GT PSP track which is embarrassing. That said the Eurogamer article is beyond retarded especially when he starts mentioning GT5:P to GT5.

That GT5 trailer was nothing special and anyone who has played GT5:P will know that the replay mode looks very good. Sure GT5 will not be not quite up to that GT5 trailer but it will be very close. Has to be said..........Forza 3 screens so far have all been bullshots and anyone whom visits Gaf will know that chespace even mentioned it. With class though it must be said mentioning how he will post gameplay shots of the cars when Polyphony Digital do so.

Tomorrow is going to be very fun; I call dibs on the GT5 thread which will be full of PD hate led by me if GT5 is not shown at Gamescom. PD will NOT ruin by birthday. >:(

^ Digital Foundary actually. Are you saying companies don't do this?

Lets see. They even sused evidence and you don't agree with it?

Here is touched up GT PSP by Polyphony and then here is actual GT PSP. MASSIVE DIFFERENCE.

Polyphony released this screenshot of GT PSP.

Actual GT PSP screen.

Now that is major BS.

did you intentionally upscale that? or... ?

there you go, you know PSP's screen isn't that huge.

IMO, both pictures are lies of a sort. In motion with an PSP in front of you, the game neither looks as good as the first shot nor as bad as the second one. While the second one may be more "real" it's still not representative of the game. Conclusion: Educate yourself and enjoy pics for what they're worth. This is no different than the airbrushing you see in magazines. Or even better: forget the pics and check out the streaming videos.

My Top 5:

Shadow of the Colossus, Metal Gear Solid 3, Shenmue, Skies of Arcadia, Chrono Trigger

My 2 nex-gen systems: PS3 and Wii

Prediction Aug '08: We see the PSP2 released fall '09. Graphically, it's basically the same as the current system. UMD drive ditched and replaced by 4-8gb on board flash memory. Other upgrades: 2nd analog nub, touchscreen, blutooth, motion sensor. Design: Flip-style or slider. Size: Think Iphone. Cost: $199. Will be profitable on day 1.
