Uh no..
ok..
why do i feel every two seconds there is something to explain about how the Wii works? Why is there always some small controversy or misunderstanding around it?
Removing Gamecube compatibility takes off the major hurdle keeping it from cost reduction. The Wii uses a custom self-loading disc drive that recognizes both mini discs and normal, large DVDs. Removing this, and being able to use a mass market self-loading media drive will reduce costs, and possibly the size significantly. Especially the cost, considering it has to be custom made now.
Removing Gamecube compatibility is not impossible, and it's not without its benefits. Of course Nintendo will probably say the controller ports and memory card ports occupied too much space for this new slim, but the truth is there is a huge cost advantage to it as well, and frankly since the Wii launched I was waiting for the time when they announced they were dropping GC BC, because that is a bigger hurdle than it looks.
