Forums - Sales - HD dvd claims lead in player sales

If you take a look at normal listing sites, take amazon for example, HD-DVD Tends to sell alot more Combo disks and Bundle Packs, Combo disks are more expensive PERIOD, and a few of Universals titles are combo disk onry, and as far as bundles go, for a while you coulden't buy them OUT of the bundle, Take the Matrix Trilogy for example, they weren't selling the individual movies (don't ask me why :/ ) so should you want that fine and dandy collection, you plopped down 70 dollars on the box set. They were doing the same with the major television series and stuff like that. I know you have a choice to buy these, but if you factor them into the total ammount of disks sold it does in fact raise the average price. That and like I said, they have a way smaller studio support.

The only thing that bothers me about the whole thing is that HD-DVD is an inferior product :/ that cost's more to invest in >< The player is the only thing cheaper, the disks are over-run with combo dvd's which cost more, and the specs of the two disks themselves heavily favor Bluray. /sigh

Specs dont totally really mean anything if you take side by side comparisons and cant tell a difference. And how is HD DVD cost more to invest in?

Also for seamless branchikng which lets you view multiple versions of the film on one disc....instead of putting 3 versions.....regular, extended and director you have one regular with seperate traintracks for each of the other versions...so you can select which way you want the train track to go before you select play.....when the info is transfered without a higher bitrate capacity you will experience a "hitch" in the film because of th ebottleneck.....because of BD's size and bitrate, we can see multiple versions on one disc without experienceing any loss in viewing quality......

I see youve taken the PQ line hook line and sinker form the HD DVD campaign, yes the codecs show us a slight difference if any on certain films, but its the entire package that must be viewed...

This news saddens me... I will be glad if Blu Ray wins because that's one of the reasons I bought a PS3. Hope the tide can still turn around for the Blu Ray camp.

War has no winners... only loosers... if this war continues like it does now it's only a matter of time before a universal format takes over and becomes the only format.

I like the fact that I can have a combo disc. I let my brother borrow my 300 because he hasn't seen it. He didn't have a high def player.

That's one thing I like about BluRay. SteelWool Proof! Scratch that disc you nasty ho! (not you, but people I loan the disc out to)

I fly this flag in victory!

I couldn't agree more, also a little side note...

Think about the progression of technology, the bump from 720p to 1080p was pretty fast, should we all assume that 1080 is the final destination? I doubt it, technology progresses, and I tell you, if they WERE to bump the resolution, HD-DVD would not be capable of supporting it, it just doesn't have the space or bitrate for it.

The other reason HD-DVD is more costy in the long run is that right now its trying to be a MOVIE ONLY format, whereas bluray is already being used in games, audio, and storage. That alone to me is worth more than HD-DVD, Bluray isn't just a movie format, it really seems to me (again opinion) to be the sucessor to the DVD. I respect your opinions, I just don't like seeing an inferior product (who copied bluray mind you) get any type of support for poor reasons.

oh brother....do you understand that in April SAL's were 80:20 according to HD DVD......in september they were 55:42:3(for combo) and now they are trumpeting 53:44:3?

Dont believe th eblogs that jump all over these numbers as they have been moving in BD's favor for the last 6 months despite the pricegap.

I´m just gonna say: HD DVD is gonna win.

You know why? Those people who buy Blu-Ray players now are tech freaks and hardcore gamers (PS3). The usual consumer isn´t interested in bigger space or better technologies - he buys the cheaper option.

The same thing happened to Beta: It was more advanced, but VHS was cheaper. Mark my words guys, HD DVD is gonna make it.

Is stupid for Toshiba not to consider the PS3 as factor in the HD war. Toshiba claims that only a small percentage of PS3 owners use it as a blu-ray player. So, if sony sales 10 million PS3 this holiday season and only 25% of the PS3 user buy blu-ray moves that still 2.5 million more people buying blu-ray discs. So them saying the PS3 wouldn’t effect anything is BS.

I agree, and can Blu-Ray have combo discs at all?  I don't know about most people but for the general public they have more than one DVD player in the house.

@Omac The prob with that statement is that if you buy a High Def Entertainment System, you generally want to view high def movies. As you've noticed the market share for both formats is still fairly small, the people that have a bunch of dvd players buy the DVD version of the movie, not the high def. And people with a game system (PS3) can happen to pick up the High def version of the film. The odds favor the later by a substantial ammount, not to forget that the combo disks cost more. Generally 5-7 dollars more.
