This holiday is going to be a big step toward the end of the format war. HD DVD has Paramount/Dreamworks on its back now and a player that is only $179 out for the holidays. Quality is near identical and HD DVD discs are less expensive with somewhat better menus. With Sony's PS3 woes and Blu-ray cost, storage capacity aside, looks like it could go either way.

i really wish people would just keep to themselves if they have no idea what theyre talking about. There is no point in argueing as its clear some people just arent in reality on this issue.

There is no $179 player, nor has one EVER BEEN MENTIONED, if youre talking the venturer which is up for presale on Target for $250, then perhaps you need to get your "facts" checked. http://www.target.com/Venturer-HD-DVD-Player-SHD7000/dp/B000W7O43U/sr=1-1/qid=1192041380/ref=sr_1_1/602-6862406-4258254?ie=UTF8&index=target&rh=k%3Aventurer&page=1

And HD DVD discs are NOT cheaper, because of the combos, it makes the MSRP $5 more than the standard BD versions.

thats the problem with this whoel format war crap, we get kids like Clandecyon who buy into the Sony hatred and brand loyalty too much that they just accept anything they see with tunnel vision and eat it hook line and sinker, and salepeople do the same thin...then we get poster liek him who spread the crap I have bolded, which isnt even true at all and it reverberates around to general message boards and then moron bloggers pick it up which then leads to more links of the misinformation.

maybe you shouldnt be a hypocrit. Not all HD DVDs are combos first of all. Second, what they mean by cheaper is production costs are cheaper, not necessarily MSRP. plus, what exactly in his comment was "sony hating" and brand loyalty? The format wars are not like console wars. They have nothing to do with brand, only the format themselves.

Ahh the good ol' format war, well I'd like to put a side note in on the whole perspective, the ONLY advantage HD-DVD has on Bluray is the fact that their player are cheaper, which at the moment isnt translating into much considering they HAVE to stay under bluray player prices, which also translates into poor 3rd party delopement hardware wise, if you take a look at almost all the other major hardware dev's, they all back Blu, y'know the player that they could still make money on lol. Its burning a hole in toshiba's wallet daily, and theyre software sales aren't doing so hot either.

Not to leave out this christmas season looks to be enormous for blu-ray, (think of all those summer films), and contrary to what Madskillz says, if you took away the PS3, they only have a few points lead, the competition would be way more head to head than it is now, they wouldent be "killing" them.

The only thing that bothers me about the whole thing is that HD-DVD is an inferior product :/ that cost's more to invest in >< The player is the only thing cheaper, the disks are over-run with combo dvd's which cost more, and the specs of the two disks themselves heavily favor Bluray. /sigh

Specs dont totally really mean anything if you take side by side comparisons and cant tell a difference.  And how is HD DVD cost more to invest in?

I like the fact that I can have a combo disc. I let my brother borrow my 300 because he hasn't seen it. He didn't have a high def player.

You pay the same if not more for a smaller piece of the pie, On average the price of a blu-ray costs less than that of an HD-DVD, That and the specs are pretty important, Didn't you ever hear the story of King-Kong lol, they put in the nice format for its picture, and COULDN'T put the best audio track on it :/ What kind of High Def experience forfeights the audio? Now now some people would say "yeah but thats only one movie etc etc." The point being if you've ALREADY run into limitation, what does that say about the future of your product?

WTF, do we pay for production costs, he is clearly talking about MSRP as he is refering to HD DVD consumer advantages.....IE: menus, player prices.

He has no idea what hes talking about clearly talking about a $179 player. So stop putting words in his mouth for simple defense when youre wrong.

Not all HD DVD's are combos, true, but it seems like all of their day and date releases are.... so perhaps you and your goons should clarify, now we CANT discuss the majority of HD DVD's because those are combos, we must only look at non combos? The fact is across the board it is more expensive to buy software on HD DVD than BD according to MSRP. Warner is only recently releasing HD DVD combo and BD for the same price for future releases, they havent taken an official stanc eon it and it is yet to be seen if this will be th enorm.....but im sure you knew all of that didnt you?

how is it on "average" cheaper to get into blu ray then HD DVD? i would love to hear your reasoning for it. Sorry for the asshole tone, but its a little ridiculous considering from the start of the format wars, HD DVD players have always been cheaper. and what do you mean by "on average"? What else you got to buy to play a HD DVD? dont you need just 3 things, a player, a tv(which is totally independent price wise) and the HD DVDs? wheres the averages come from?

its not all about Video, the bitrate factor and size is important becaus eonly a certain amount of information can pass a given time...with HD DVD bit rate toppe dout lower than BD you cant run the audio and video together during "hectic" scenes, and then you take into account the size, as the aforementioned post talks about king kong where the audio wouldnt fit, let alone pass with bitrate.

Go ahead an dlook at some of your favorite HD DVD releases...all the day and date ones, even most that arent...they are all roughly $5 more than their BD counterparts becaus eof the combo...so you pay mor eupfront for the hardware, but over time, the software saves you money....obviously this will most likely desintigrate but fo rnow, if you bought a stadalone of each and roughly 40 movies the whole package would cost you more for HD DVD.
