I bought mine on European Launch day, March 23 2007 and its the original 60gb.
Never had any reliability issues.

60GB bought on Ebay in April of 2007.
No troubles.
60gig full BC upgraded to 80gig. still whisper quiet, no problems.
80GB, bought it a month or two ago.

PS One/2/p/3slim/Vita owner. I survived the Apocalyps3/Collaps3 and all I got was this lousy signature.

40Gb model bought in December 2007 in South Africa.
Died October 2008 (lens failure). Was still under warranty and was replaced with a new 40Gb model.
