i will say this - without huge budget, great CGI, right actors and actresses those movies will fail hard, especially God of War considering what we've seen in games so far(same goes to Dante's Inferno live action movie).

Well one thing you have to consider is the directors. Both usually do 100+ million dollar movies. So no, CGI and visuals wont suck... Story and characters on the other hand...

A variation on the dude who's family gets killed so he goes on a homicidal rampage of revenge vowing to take down the one responsible. Yeah, I've seen the Punisher, it wasn't that good either.

Yes yes God of War has some nifty variations and subversions of the main theme, but not enough for it to be source material for great drama.

Still as long as it gets mediocre reviews I'll be hitting the cinema to see it. If the reviews totally tank I'll watch it on Blu-ray.

Because I don't know the Gears story I'm unlikely to go to the cinema to see it even with OK reviews.

Edit: one thing to bear in mind is that to make a movie of similar calibre to either game will take a budget at least twice (maybe even three times) that of the game development budget. Is the producer really going to invest that kind of green in a VG adaptation?.

Don't let the unfamiliarity of the Gears story stop you from seeing the movie. If don't right that will be an amazing pop corn flick. Story is beyond simple...

I am a sucker for these movies so I hope both get made. I liked Wolverine even Transforemres 2 this year...GI Joe on the other hand made me cringe... Loud pop corn movie has to be really bad to make me cringe.

Otherwise I think that these movies will get the $$$ needed to make a proper big screen adaption. My predicion is Gears  budget around 120 mil and God of war around 80-100. Tomb Raider is thus far the biggest gaming movie ever made (according to budget...not counting the terrible Final Fantasy cartoon/movie) with oer 100 mill budget. So if a franchise like Tomb raider could get investors of that magniture...GEars and God of War should easily get lots of funding.

Gears of War would sell more bcause the series more popular to teens.

TO GOD BE THE GLORY

Since I never played Gears of War for more then 5 mins I'm going to say God of War.

Oh and BTW the abbreviation for Gears of War is GeOW

@disolitude: Congrats on your thread making it to page 6 before somebody brought this shit up.

I did not know much about the Gears movie history, so I decided to look it up.

Gears of War:

Companies involved:  New Line, Legendary Pictures, Warner Brothers

Having Legendary Pictures co-finance and co-produce is a VERY good thing.  They have a history of allowing directors to do what they need to do to get their ideas on screen.  This might actually allow the movie to be R-rated.

Producers: Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey

Looking at the past projects for both of these guys does not bode well.  Marty is a new comer with the main production being Twilight.  Twilight being successful may give him more clout for getting a better budget.  Wyck Godfrey has a not so good track record.  Twilight and I, Robot being his most successful productions.  With a couple clunkers in there: Flight of the Phoenix, AvP, and Eragon.

Co-Producer: Cliffy B

If Cliffy is given enough power, this could help to keep the movie in line with the game.  This could keep it from becoming like Doom where the movie only had a passing resemblance to the game.

Script: Chris Morgan

He did a decent job with Wanted, and a somewhat decent job with Cellular.  I haven't seen the two Fast and Furious movies that he did, so I cannot comment on that.  Seems like a decent script writer.  Means that this will most likely be nothing special.  But it should not be bad though.

First Draft Script:  Stuart Beattie

He wrote Collateral, which is a very nice movie.  He helped on the first Pirates, which is a good thing.  Very entertaining.  Never saw 30 Days of Night, but I heard it was decent.  He did minor help with the second and third Pirates, that is a good thing that he only had a minor hand in those.  He helped with Australia, which the only complaint I have on that one is that it was too damn long.  A connection with G.I.Joe is a VERY bad thing in my opinion.  Overall, a competent writer.

Director: Len Wiseman

The two Underworld movies are decent with some nicely done action set pieces.  Die Hard was tragic for me to watch, mainly due to the neutering of the Die Hard tone.  The movie was still well shot and the set pieces(while over the top) were quite well done, but Fox, being Fox, decided to make it more marketable.  A very competent director.

Overall, it looks like a group of competent people are involved with this project.  Could be a good romp.

Oh and news about the movies has slowed to a crawl.  Looks like it could actually be going the way of Halo.  Some of this info may not even be correct anymore.

GoW > Gears [I rarely use GeoW]

EDIT: When you think about it though... It seems alot harder to fuck up with gears...

4 ≈ One

It's like asking which of your excrements smells better.

Kimi wa ne tashika ni ano toki watashi no soba ni ita

Itsudatte itsudatte itsudatte

Sugu yoko de waratteita

Nakushitemo torimodosu kimi wo

I will never leave you

Neither director is amazing or obviously superior to the other.

I'll wait until more information is available to make a prediction.

Damn...great post and info. Gears has a chance of being a good July 4th movie, Ironman style...

I am more into films like Troy and 300. So naturally God of War would have to be my pick.

Also i love rush hour and x-men the last stand. I hate die hard 4 with a passion
