Forums - Sony - Developers have to purchase Trophies?

You're seriously misunderstanding him. They don't have to purchase anything. It works exactly the same as Microsoft's achievements. I'm not sure exactly how trophies break down pointwise, but on the 360, retail games can have 1000 gamerscore and arcade games can only have 200. Since Fat Princess is a downloadable title, they were limited point-wise and could either give you only a few trophies to earn and include some silver and gold ones, or they could give you a whole bunch of bronze ones.

Exactly.

If it were any other way, people would be playing nothing but PSN titles to get Platinums.

I was reading on the playstation forum under Fat Princess to see what was being said and i came across this FAQ that said, and i quote;

"Why are all the trophies Bronze?
Each level of trophy costs a different amount of points, and as a PSN game (compared to retail store games on disc) we had less points to work with.  This is a Sony policy.  We made the design decision to offer more trophies, even if they had to be at the Bronze level. We feel this was the best compromise at the time, and while we appreciate feedback there is nothing we can change about the system now that the game is released."

My first reaction was, eeh saywhatnow?

Didnt have any idea that that's how it worked!? I just thought developers together with Sony could set the number of trophies wanted and decide on what value they wanted them to be in, based on to the difficulty level of that trophy. Atleast in rough terms. Because I know they have to have some sort of plan for how Trophies shall work and prevent games from having massive amounts to just "give away". But I didnt know developers had to spend some sort of points to get trophies in their game?

And how come a PSN title has less points than a disc based game? What are these points and how do they earn them?

uhm dl titles have less points because they are suposed to be smaller games, a bzone trophie costs less points so u can have more of them. they dont pay for this stuff...

Yeah i get that they're not actually handing someone money to have trophies.

But take these two games for example..
Fat Princess 21 trophies - all bronze
Super stardust HD 17 throphies, 2 Gold, 6 silver, 9 bronze.

Why does Super Stardust HD get more points than Fat Princess? Both strickly PSN titles, both not much hard content, both quite small, both well promoted before release.

Cuboid - 24 trophies, 6 of which is silver. This game has more trophis in total and still manage 6 silver trophies?

PixelJunk Eden - 32 trophies, 2 silver. Same here?

How can it range so much? And how do you "earn" these points?

Cuboid, Pixeljunk Eden and Stardust have all had DLC, which allows them to have extra trophies.

I think they can make exceptions in some cases, though, such as WipEout HD.

But I didn't think there was a set limit for point, because disc titles have extremely varied numbers of points.

well...if there really are oddities outside of possible dlc...its possible the points limit was reduced, changed or even implemented later. so some of the older games could have a higher amount of points. since this is all hidden... cant really be sure of this ...

One of the first retail games to have trophies adds up to 82 points. Super Stardust HD had 21 points when it debuted, with the DLC adding more points.

The TC completly misunderstood the article.

sad

Like achivements they have a point llimit. In achivements the requirement/limit 1000 disc,200 for XBL and 125 per DLC (max 1500 unless exception granteed by MS)

What is annoying is that there is no consistant standard on how many points games get.

Retail games often have different values if you add the trophies points up. One £8 PSN game will feature X amount of points, the next £8 game will feature Y amount, the next Z amount.

Your point value is wrong. Each game disc game has the same limit of points. As do PSN titles. (unless you count add-ons that have their on point limit, like burnout)

@solidpumar: Nice! I always wondered exactly what the point breakdown was.
