Forums - Sony - Developers have to purchase Trophies?

I was reading on the playstation forum under Fat Princess to see what was being said and i came across this FAQ that said, and i quote;

"Why are all the trophies Bronze?
Each level of trophy costs a different amount of points, and as a PSN game (compared to retail store games on disc) we had less points to work with.  This is a Sony policy.  We made the design decision to offer more trophies, even if they had to be at the Bronze level. We feel this was the best compromise at the time, and while we appreciate feedback there is nothing we can change about the system now that the game is released."

My first reaction was, eeh saywhatnow?

Didnt have any idea that that's how it worked!? I just thought developers together with Sony could set the number of trophies wanted and decide on what value they wanted them to be in, based on to the difficulty level of that trophy. Atleast in rough terms. Because I know they have to have some sort of plan for how Trophies shall work and prevent games from having massive amounts to just "give away". But I didnt know developers had to spend some sort of points to get trophies in their game?

And how come a PSN title has less points than a disc based game? What are these points and how do they earn them?

...Uhm........................................ Wow...

You're seriously misunderstanding him. They don't have to purchase anything. It works exactly the same as Microsoft's achievements. I'm not sure exactly how trophies break down pointwise, but on the 360, retail games can have 1000 gamerscore and arcade games can only have 200. Since Fat Princess is a downloadable title, they were limited point-wise and could either give you only a few trophies to earn and include some silver and gold ones, or they could give you a whole bunch of bronze ones.

Doesn't sound like they're paying for anything.

It sounds like what he means is SONY sets a limit to how many trophy points a game can carry. Like PSN games can only have a Max of 30 points while Retail games can only have a max of 100. Or something like that. This may have something to do with the price of the game.

It sounds like the dev's went with alot of bronze and less of anything else so there could be more trophies in the game, instead of just a few trophies but with more points per trophy.

Which makes sense since:
Bronze - 1 point
Silver - 2 Points
Gold - 6 Points
Platinum - 12 Points

That's all I'm getting from this article... doesn't sound like anyone's paying for anything...

4 ≈ One

No, no. The points are for the trophies. Bronze are one, Silver are two, Gold are six (?), and Platinum are twelve (?). Something like that anyway. Those add together to determine your overall level. Each disc based game can only have something like 81 points so if I was to buy Uncharted, and you buy Killzone 2, we both can earn the same amount of points. The same goes for downloadable games, but they have less points since they're usually smaller games.

EDIT: Beaten by two people, but I hope you understand what's going on now. The developers don't pay with any point system. It's just about the trophies themselves.

Hahahaha, will do.

I believe retail games are set at a max of 82 points (some have it), with a minimum of like 78 (never seen a retail with less than 78). PSN titles that aren't retail games are limited to 21 points. I think all DLC is restricted to 12-14 points or so.
