Forums - Sony - Kotaku asked about the BC and got a reply

http://kotaku.com/gaming/customer-service/sony-could-run-bc-on-40gb-ps3s-they-just-dont-want-to-308467.php

This whole backwards-compatibility thing on the new 40GB PS3 is a pinch confusing. Why, exactly, can't the new model run PS2 games when the old one could? Tired of asking questions of the night, I instead asked SCEE, who fired back a super-detailed, super-helpful guide to the 40GB's BC capabilities. Which is published in full after the click. For now, though, let's just focus on the part where they tell us they could run PS2 games on the 40GB PS3. They just can't be bothered:

The 40GB model, to be launched in Europe on 10th October, is a new model and is not equipped with any of the semi conductors from the PS2, and backwards compatibility would therefore have to be achieved by software emulation alone. The sheer numbers of PS2 titles available, together with the increased complexity of using a software only solution for each and every title means that to ensure accurate software emulation for the majority would be technically challenging, time consuming and costly. As we have mentioned on several occasions, our engineering resources are now focused on developing new and innovative features and services for the PS3 and, as a result the 40GB model does not have backwards compatibility with PS2 titles.
Who doesn't enjoy a spot of corporate indifference, eh folks?

Sony's Friendly Guide To 40GB PS3 Backwards Compatibility

PS one
The PS3 has never been equipped with either the CPU or GPU that were used in the original PlayStation, and the backwards compatibility for PS one titles has therefore been made available through software emulation from
the beginning. Therefore backwards compatibility for PS1 titles remains the same no matter how many times the model is changed.

PS2
On the other hand, backwards compatibility for PS2 titles is largely made possible through the use of actual semiconductors, supported by the PS3 system software. The 20GB and 60GB PS3 models launched in Japan and the USA were equipped with both the PS2 Emotion Engine and Graphics Synthesiser chips and we could therefore guarantee over 90% backwards compatibility for PS2 titles.

The 60GB model launched in Europe was a new model (shared with the 80GB model launched subsequently in USA) which contains only a modified version of the Graphics Synthesiser chip from the PS2 and not the Emotion Engine chip. The European launch model therefore used a combination of software and the modified version of the PS2 Graphics Synthesiser chip to deliver backwards compatibility for PS2 titles. As a result the percentage of
backwards compatible PS2 titles was slightly reduced.

The 40GB model, to be launched in Europe on 10th October, is a new model and is not equipped with any of the semi conductors from the PS2, and backwards compatibility would therefore have to be achieved by software
emulation alone. The sheer numbers of PS2 titles available, together with the increased complexity of using a software only solution for each and every title means that to ensure accurate software emulation for the
majority would be technically challenging, time consuming and costly. As we have mentioned on several occasions, our engineering resources are now focused on developing new and innovative features and services for the PS3
and, as a result the 40GB model does not have backwards compatibility with PS2 titles.

The current PS3 system software and future updates will continue to support backwards compatibility for the current 60GB and 80GB models, and publishers can check their new PS2 titles to ensure they play on the 60GB
and 80GB models.

Keen gamers, for whom backwards compatibility is important, can still purchase the existing 60GB PS3 Starter Pack which contains an extra SIXAXIS controller, two first party titles and has extensive backwards
compatibility with PS2 titles.

Think they left out the bit that says "keen gamers had also best get cracking", because if they don't get a 60GB model now they're up shit creek without so much as a paddle.

Kotaku has got gold tonight.

http://kotaku.com/gaming/awaiting/new-halo-3xbox-360-bundle-hits-europe-308454.php

Forza 2 and Marvel UA? Thanks, but no. It's Halo 3 that's hot right now, and for Europeans who want bundled games with their 360, it's Halo 3 they're going to get. Above you can see what looks like MS Europe's official Halo 3 bundle, which includes a regular 360 (with HDMI), 20GB HDD, Play & Charge kit, wireless controller and a copy of Halo 3, all for €387.95 (or €409.96 on GAME's website). The pic and link are from Portugal, and we're not sure whether this is a GAME exclusive or not, but looking at the languages (English, French, Spanish & Italian?) and ratings (Britain's BBFC and Germany's USK) on the box this thing's definitely destined for more than just Portugal. Flying monkeys have been dispatched to Microsoft Europe HQ in search of confirmation. We'll let you know when thy get back.

wow halo bundle kick ass

With regard to Call of Duty 4 having an ultra short single player campaign, I guess it may well have been due to the size limitations of DVD on the XBox 360, one of various limitations multi-platform game designers will have to take into consideration-Mike B

Game trailers-Halo 3 only dissapointed the people who wanted to be dissapointed.

Bet with Harvey Birdman that Lost Odyssey will sell more then Blue dragon did.

That's a better idea :)

I am still shocked that the Halo 360 didn't come with Halo 3!

Ok kotaku, being dramatic much? sorry to repeat myself but I seriously doubt sony is going to offer a low spec ps3 without also offering a higher spec ps3 (similar to the 60gig "starter pack") WITH PS2 BC to european customers.

Give some credit to Sony ppl; at least the lose money in order to make you buy the console, whereas Nintendo steals from you in open sight.

It is kinda a PR blunder to on the one side promote the PS3 as a super computer that can do even proteïne folding. And on the other hand the PS3 isn't being able to cope with software emulation, yet the internet is filled with software emulators that work already better then the PS3's BC.

So the cell is hard enough to complete any taks, yet is costs too much do develop. ...nice statement towards developers...

@ameratsu

You can never assume anything in regards to what Sony will or will not do. Few things they do make sense until you realize they are being driven by desperation. The desperate are capable of doing anything at any time. Were there a logic that said Sony could save a billion dollars by only having one sku then Sony would probably choose this sku and discontinue all others.

Every company is desperate...... to make more money. Sony now offers consumers more choices, I don't see any difference from what Microsoft did. Sooner or later, Nintendo will launch another SKU. This is simply the nature of console war at this generation.  Why not just accept the fact and embrace it! Buy sooner, you enjoy first; buy later, you get better deal!

 lol, steals from you?

lol.

lol.

i think it's standard to sell things for more than it costs to make them to make a profit. not everyone uses the loss-lead model.
