Forums - Sony - Why is the PS3 slim such a big deal to everyone?

10% of 400 = 40... are you a prodigy of the US public school system?

If Sony lost 10% per PS3, why did you say $420? When the PS3 retails for $400.

Are you a prodigy of the US public school system?

Good thing Sony doesn't get money from retails sales.

A slim PS3 is lighter, smaller, more convenient, Space Saver so a lot of people care for it especially in Japan and Asian countries.

A slim PS3 maybe cheaper and people holding back to buy a PS3 because it's quite expensive and those people might purchase it.

Lastly people in forums expect tons of PS3 will sell because of it and may take second place because of it. They just care about the sales not the slim itself.

If there is a slim I regret my PS3 purchase this year because I like the slim one. I like it small because my room is not that big and it could save a lot of space.

EDIT

They feel it will save Sony's PS3 line and overtake the Xbox 360...Once that happens they will gun for the Wii...They are also used to Sony using this model of production...They are hopeful for GangBusters..Just like at BHR's "Sony Won 2009 Holiday thread"

Because it's cheaper, and I might buy it if that happens.

I don't think it's the slim PS3 itself, just that it means big cuts in costs for the manufacturing of the PS3, and thus, a greater chance of a price-cut.

This

I would have to strongly disagree... Yes, a die shrink of the cell nets more processors per wafer and a lower cost, but a complete redesign and a shrink is expensive.  It pays off more in the long run but miniaturization of existing technology is pretty much always MORE expensive in the short run unless the materials that are being saved are precious.  I don't think plastic is that pricey, lol.  I would think the redesign to a slim would STOP a pricecut from happening until they recoup the redesign costs and then we would see a price cut...

The PS3's components have already been shrunk rapidly.... they could just be putting a new case around it and moving the PSU outside (thus cutting back on cooling systems).

Here's a comparison image of the launch PS3's mobo and the current one:

It's interesting the note the similarity in the shape of the mobo to the rumoured PS3 Slim design - maybe they haven't had to change much at all. They may have started using a smaller die, for which they'll have to pay the R&D for, but I think it would be more coinciding with the Slim, rather than being done for the Slim, if you get what I mean.

probably because it will be cheaper, but its definitely not because it looks nice! if those pics are the real slim then its ugly as sin, look at the cheap plastic they used! they should have used that nice shiny stuff on it again

I am >.<

Are you a prdigy of the... English speaking country public school system? Eh, eh?! *mad face*

its important because it will be cheaper to produce and will better compete in the marketplace. no other reason really. plus i want a second ps3 and a slim will do just fine.

...not much time to post anymore, used to be awesome on here really good fond memories from VGchartz...

PSN: Skeeuk - XBL: SkeeUK - PC: Skeeuk

really miss the VGCHARTZ of 2008 - 2013...

I'm looking to buy a second ps3 for a Blu ray player - so price cut would be cool. I would prefer the original ps3, but If the ps3 slim is coming in September I guess I'll have to buy that one :D

  Unleash The Beast!
