Probaly because VGC is one of the best communities out there and offers alot of info.
Probaly because VGC is one of the best communities out there and offers alot of info.
And here is my input:
I think for this site to progress even further, it's got to get it's content out there. For example, posting alot of the site's articles etc on social news sites. When Halo 3 reaches 10M, the internet should know this via VGChartz. When a latest game is reviewed by us, people should know about it (being part of metacritic should help this).
So that's my point, VGChartz has alot of rich content, but at the minute you have to come and find it. We need to bring the content to the internet more in my opinion.
For the weekly sales and latest news , the forums can be fun too (sometimes)

This has shifted greatly over time for me. First I used to come, like almost everyone, for the sales charts. Then, I started posting in the forums and it quickly became my main focus (and it's still a big one). Also, the DB came and I started worked hard on it. And now, my news job means I'm focusing more on the news part.
So, now I'd say the most important is both News and Forums. But of course I still pay attention to the DB and check the sales charts, just not as much as I used to before

used to be mostly for the forums, but I find myself reading more and more into the stats we offer and a ton of new features
Personally, I don't think that the front page needs a "Popular News Stories" and "Latest News Stories", I just think it needs a "latest news" in place of where "Popular News Stories" is currently located.
The space where "latest news" is currently held could be used to hold the Worldwide Top 10 and the Weekly Hardware Numbers. This will give you space to shift the Total Worldwide Flash widget to the right.
The reason why I would do this would be to give more space to that news widget thing showing the biggest stories. Making it bigger would catch the eye. The box should be used for more than news stories, though. Clicking it should bring you to uploaded videos, news stories, game reviews, etc, to pull people to more areas of the site.
It would also reduce the amount of "clutter" on the front page.

As for why I come to VGC, I come for the community - I used to come for the numbers, but being a Sony fan, I've grown somewhat distanced from that section (
), now I stay around for the forums. Though, it's mainly the Off-Topic I partake in, now... the gaming chat just seems to be the same-old, same-old... but that's more the industries fault than VGC's.

If you're really looking into expanding the feature set of VGChartz, and diversifying the content massively, may I recommend simply turning the front page into a portal that spans off to the other main parts of the site - this could allow for a proper dedicated space for each area, and less clutter on the front page.
Sort of like how the BBC website functions. You have a little bit of the latest of what's going on in each section, but you have to properly go into the section to view all the content. The size of the "advertising-content" box on the top-right of the Beeb's homepage was the kind of thing I was alluding to at the start of the post.

Anyway, sorry if this post was rambling somewhat, my brain's frazzled atm (I'm jumping into C# and I don't like the way it's all class dependent).
I would even be willing to do the simple task of posting our weekly sales figures, latest reviews, and sales articles (like Kowen's) on N4G.
Outside of this site, there are still a few credibility doubts out there - even though our numbers are perfectly in line. However, if people keep hearing the name 'VGChartz' then they will soon disregard those false concerns.
I can understand your concerns.
At first I visited VGC for the sales, but this changed with the community. I really like the forums. You can find every news by visiting the forums, the most important and most discussed news is even on the front page.
If you want to focus more on the news, put the "most popular stories" in the centre of the front page and the "latest headlines" on the left, so that the news with pictures are in the center of this page. Thats way better than just headlines. Or you could insert 2 lines of text to each headline. I mean, just the headline alone won't do it.
I think you should "advertise" some of the great news/articles stuff better. The interview with Bungie for ODST is something other pages desperately wanted. You had it and it was on the page for 2 days... That had so much more potential.
Why don't you do a video for some stuff out there? It don't has to be big. There is a German website offering a video on a weekly basis. They just present two or three new games and talk about them for 3 minutes each.
Here is an example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cUjGmKmr-Ro
This is not hard to do and it is a great feature. Even HipHopGamer talks shit for 30 minutes each week :D :D
You could also present the weekly sales in this video. That would be great, present 2 or 3 games, show the sales, show how they might change next week because of releases etc and thats it.
Imagine not having GamePass on your console...
For the news.
the guys here gets the news faster than any other site.
The only think I really dislike is the site's inabilty to fit on my screen. I constantly have to scroll to the left and right to see the edges. I haven't encountered any other site that has this problem, ever.
Other than that, this site rocks!
