Forums - Sony - Why I think Sony could drop 100 dollars on the PS3 and profit from it.

"We lost money this quarter because we are working on a new Playstation console and a new PSP".

........

I'll leave it at that and stay silly.

Announcing what your working on would be one hell of a way to stay ahead of the competition. Wouldn't you agree Slime?

I understand that you think he is wrong but you at least have to come in with some kind of rebuttal other than "out his ass" or "assumptions" because everyone here is only assuming Sony is still losing so much money.

It's cold hard facts that Sony is losing money.

Show me then.

Financial report doesn't prove PS3 is losing all that money.

Doesn't Sony have more internal studios and anyone else? Haven't they been working on a shit load of titles between this year and last?

Hasn't Sony been pouring money into R&D for the PSP-3000 that released last year and the PSP-Go that is releasing this year?

Hasn't Sony been pouring money into R&D for the PS3 Slim if it indeed real?

Haven't they poured more money into advertising?

I don't know exactly how much each factors into their loss for the previous year but I can say it pretty safe to say that all of that lose isn't directly connected to the PS3.

Anyone thinking so is just assuming and that is no worse than what the topic creator is doing. Am I right?

I am pretty sure if MS had around 15 studios working on stuff instead of just 4-5 they wouldn't have looked so hot either. Am I right?

If next report shows profit there will be a lot of people here who will get a nice big "I told you so".

You're just silly. Sony themselves have stated that PS3 is the big money sink. All the way since the launch in Nov 2006.

Almost every quarter the Entertainment division has lost several $100 millions and Sony has never said it's due to R&D. The division is still losing big money, including the latest quarter as demonstrated by the financial report that was released just a few days ago.

Sony has commented earlier this year that PS3 manufacturing costs are only 10% more than its retail cost. PS3 hasn't been SCE's moneysink since 2008, especially in the past few months with how few they've been selling.

Sony's recent losses are a combination of things including the appreciated yen, sluggish software sales, R&D for PSP Go! and the PS3 slim, financing the development of 25+ games while only releasing 3-5, and most recently the merger with the VAIO and walkman divisions.

well as far as the last financial report we can pretty much assume they were losing $40 on each PS3, i mean the report was from may 15th and the period ended june 30th, i doubt there was a change in between there in fact there are probably many of the same ps3s that stayed on the shelves during that time. That's 44 million in losses, far from what it used to be but it isn't good.

TWR - Good thing the Ps3 isn't 440 but closer to 420. Now why dont you think going from 65 -> 45 wouldn't be half as significant as 90 -> 65? The chips aren't the only thing that is saving money. Just like the last time it will use smaller heatsinks (maybe none at all) smaller mother board and smaller fans and smaller power brick and smaller chasis. Sure the shrink from the chips may not be as significant but using less material for everything else sure would be. On top of this less shipping costs. Even if it isn't as significant as 150 all they need is 120 and it would still break even. It's very manageable.

the quote from Sony was that the PS3 was 10% higher than it's price, that's it. It didn't say if it was the price in stores or the price for stores. You don't know if it's 440, and also you don't know how much retailers are taking, i've heard as low as $5.

I was thinking that the 70% reduction was because of the strong Yen... They can buy more parts for the same yen thus saving them money.. but they lose most of that money cause of the Strong Yen when selling the PS3.. but hey.. it's sunday.. after a nice night and I'm still drinking a lot of beer...

What do you mean, Sony's gaming division only lost $44 million in the last Q?

well if they lose $40 per system and they sell 1.1 million like last quarter that would equal 44 million.

i'm just talking about PS3 hardware alone, there was something else losing money too, PS2 and PSP should have been profitable as well.
