Forums - Sony - PS3 Hardware Swap Question

I have question for PS3 owners that have had to take a hard drive from one PS3 and put it into another. Will the new PS3 attempt to format the old PS3's harddrive? I want a 60GB Full BC PS3. My brother has one and I was going to buy a 160GB unit and trade it to him, but I wanted to know if it new PS3 would format the data from his hard drive. If so, I wanted to know what would be the best way to back up and transfer his save files to the new PS3. New PS3 units don't have card readers from what I know, would I be able to buy a card reader attachment for new unit? Suggestions?

yes it would format it.

u need as external HDD or USB big enough. and use the ps3 back up utility.

Yep. The only time it doesn't format is when you take it out and put it back into the same exact system.

EDIT: You can back them up on to anything. External HDD. Memsticks, USB Flash Drives, Even your Ipod or Cell phone if you can connect them through USB.

EDIT AGain [keep forgetting stuff]:

Yes. You can use USB splitters and USB Memstick/CF/SD Card Port adapters on the PS3.

why would you want the 60 GB model? that thing going to screw up on you with time and you'll get the yloD.
btw use Exteral if you have to , or buy a PS2 (much much better IMO)

Yeah its simple as plugging in a USB storage device and then using the PS3 backup utility. may take a few minutes to back up but everything on his hard drive can be transferred to his new one once it is installed into his new PS3. just plug the usb device with his info on it and transfer the data.

Well I bought the 80GB Killzone 2/MGS 4 bundle. I was going to get the Uncharted 160GB bundle but I needed to pick up a flash drive to back up my brothers save data. Well at least I think Killzone 2 is a good game, I'd trade my brother MGS4 for something else but he already has the game. I managed to snag a 500GB hard drive as well. Not sure what I'll do with my brother's 60GB hard drive when I get it.
