Forums - Sales - Nintendo sales down 40%, profit 60%?

What are the wannabe mods telling people what they can post and can't post?? This is a sales discussion about financial reports of one of the "big 3". I think it is perfectly acceptable to mention the other 2 console makers in the dicsussion.

Well, I have seen people get banned for posting something off topic. If I remember correctly, someone got banned for posting 360 version sales to a topic about a wii game.

They still are in the black.

The drop is about what I expected.

Still making money, still outpacing the competition. And it's important to note these sales come in the middle of a recession, at the price the Wii launched in December 06 and without the effect of multi-million selling hardware such as Wii Fit, Brawl and Mario Kart Wii.

They're clearly down from the stellar sales they experienced, but it's no big deal. There was bound to be a drop at some point, and this is the most logical time for it to happen. The stronger software of the second half of the year will push sales up again, but if they want to hit that 26million shipment for Wii, I think they'll need a $50 cut in October.

How hypocritical for people on vgchartz to bash on sony and the playstation 3 for their not so good financial results while nintendo is also suffering the same thing. Why not bash on nintendo as well for their not so good financial results? "Oh no because they're not sony, we don't care about nintendo because errr......they don't make playstation products, blah blah blah". Xbox 360 fanboys.

The original article mentions Sony's financial results, why aren't people allowed to comment on them?

Also, while a 60% drop in profits is nothing to throw a party about, it's not like they'll file for brankrupcy either. The company still made 442 millions in one freaking quarter!

Making profit, unlike most other companies, during an economic disaster?.............sounds good to me.

Really bad quarter for Nintendo. But, what I find most interesting is that Iwata did not change the financial forecast for the fiscal year. I really wonder what they have brewing that makes them so confident. Nintendo is usually very conservative on their forcasts...but they think they can make upt the almost 3M unit deficet.

To my mind, this pretty much guarantees that if WSR doesn't cause a huge surge in Wii hardware sales, Nintendo is going to drop price or release a new SKU for the holidays.

Maybe nintendo should be worried. 57% drop is a big drop, no matter how much you are selling.

This is why it's ok to bring up Microsoft or Sony. Nintendo is still making money while their compeition is losing lots of money. That's not off topic, it's making a comparison of financial data from Nintendo to their compeititors.

It's perfectly fine for me to bring up Sony and Microsoft in this thread.  And if you noticed, I wasn't even the first person to mention them.  And Carl, pointing out that Nintendo actually has a dollar figure in the 'Net Profit' column isn't damage control.  Don't be mad.

I don't know how you all want to discuss Nintendo's financials OUTSIDE of the broader context of the industry.

Before you edited, you didnt even mention Nintendo, the Wii or the DS. You didnt even mention any profits made by them.

You didnt point out a "net profit". All your post was, was damage control.

Carl, everything is damage control to you.  Again, chill out.  Things will get better... one day.

There is no way to spin the results, Nintendo did much worse Q1 09 than Q1 08. This is a fact, no one can say otherwise. However, they did make a profit (once again, fact).

Now, in discussing this, we can look at the other actors in the market Nintendo is in and try and compare. I think that is reaosnable no? MS I haven't looked at so couldn't comment. Sony I have (as came out today as well) and we see that they aren't in great shape either (everything down except PS2 HW shipments). And they are making a loss.

Now, taking this into account, you can conclude that maybe Nintendo's situation is not "that" bad and still be on topic.

Or am I way out of line here?

No you're not out of line.  People want to come and here and be so down on Nintendo for profits being down 60%, but God forbid you compare their financial standing to one of their competitors.

You see, it's impossible to be down on Nintendo at all when you make that comparison - which defeats the purpose of the thread.
