Forums - Gaming - PS3 PAL SDTV performance is subpar compared to 360.

I was just reading a Eurogamer article about the frame-rate of PAL SDTV games and how they perform. It seems like Sony has returned to, or stayed with the old mantra of having the games running slower in PAL than in NTSC.

Essentiall on a PAL SDTV

Xbox 360: up to 30/60FPS

PS3: up to25/50FPS

Wii: up 25/30/50/60 (best support)

So if you take a game which has already got heavily fluxuating frame-rate, add in the cap at 25 frames per second, spice it up with an extra frame of latency from the Blu Tooth controller on the PS3 and you reach the point where you just say 'hey I get it, Xbox 360 and Wii support PAL better, alright!'

So heres the link, take a look for yourself.

Wait... PAL standard has always had 50 Hz frequency while NTSC has 60 HZ. PAL has NEVER been 60 Hz, 60 Hz only came to Europe with HDTV. Most old CRT TV's in Europe only supports 50 Hz so they can't even do 60 Hz. Games have been slower in PAL because TV's there can't even do 60 Hz. Better CRT TV's has 100 Hz but not even those always could do 60 Hz so supporting 50 Hz serves only very small audience (mostly newer LCD SDTV's).

Well, when I first got my PS3 I only had a PAL SDTV. I got The Darkness and I thought the game seemed very framey. I couldn't afford a HDTV in South Africa (they are beyond the means of most), so I got a 22inch HDCP monitor for my room to play on. I tried The Darkness again, expecting it to be even worse running at 720p, but I was amazed that it seemed to run the same if not better.

i once game on a SD TV it looked nice over component. but we get american NTSC games though.

Most PAL TVs support 60hz, and I mean like 99%. Since Gears 1 doesn't run at 50hz and there hasn't been a massive 30 page thread blowing the issue out of proportion it can't be a significant issue. Since the issue got past the scrutiny of those who would love to bring it to everyones attention it must be a really insy lil issue.

I guees they couldn't afford a better monitor after paying for live then? Anyway, Gears has nothing to do with the PS3. Screw the framerates off people with an sdtv anyway, hd gaming on lowtech don't mix babe. Like getting a F1 frame and putting a Volkswagen beetle engine in it.

Im torn,

I want to say who gives a shit about SDTV performance.
But so many people still have to play it like that, my mate uses his PS3 on a 15" SDTV in his kitchen.
