Forums - Sony - Sony PS3 components demand growing significantly

I really hate to break it to anyone getting excited over the slim PS3, but it'll probably be more expensive than the phat, which will probably retain its current price to pay for the slim's higher manufacturing costs.

Why do people keep saying the slim will have higher manufacturing costs? Aren't the slim models made of less material and have smaller components/dye sizes, making them cheaper to produce?

Presumably, but there's the associated R&D costs to consider. Plus Sony did just announce a more expensive (though cheaper to produce, one would think) new model of the PSP, justifying the extra cost to the consumer as an "early adopter premium" or whatever.

So I wouldn't be surprised to see the fat get a price cut and the slim introduced at the current price.

Basic logic would imply a higher price, looking at things like laptops vs dekstop PCs and whatnot.  It would be like cramming the ps3's internal architectue into something the size of the PSP.  Sure, it might be possible, but it would take a hell of a lot of R&D, and yield rates for whatever product they might come up with would be incrediblly low (just like initial yield rates on the 90nm Cells were low, hence Sony disabling the 8th SPU to increase the number of usable units).

With the ps3 Slim, however, they aren't trying to cram the ps3's components into an unnecessarily small space.  They're simply trimming the excess that remains from the original model.

Yeah, the motherboard went from rectangular to a rather square shape through its many revisions. The shape of the mobo now matches up quite well with the "leaked" pictures of the PS3 slim...hmmm.

Actually, I beleive that's the current PS3 motherboard compared to the original 60/20gb ones.

This user at Gaf made a mockup to match those early leaked images.

Hummm, I don´t believe PS3 slim is comming 2009.. and I think there´s too much bias around sales..

@Kowenicki
I should think so.
Even if they make an average of one million PS3 a month throughout the whole year, that's only 12 million PS3's.
That's still 1 mill short of target.
This might just be one manufacturer out of (?) though placing the orders from that supplier...idk

So are people here saying the title of this thread should be "component orders surprisingly low" considering the 13m shipped forecast? 3m seems to leave them with a lot of woirk to do to get to the 13m.

Sony has a dismal track record on forecast accuracy. This forecast of increasing PS3 sales by 30% in a recession year was at the very least, very suspect.

At the beginning of the year I said they'd need to pull a huge rabbit out of their hats to attain it. Now I say it's outright impossible unless they cut the PS3 price by like $200.

Well if they would hurry up and release the Slim already at a a 300-350 price already. I have so many friends in RL that had PS2s and are waiting to be able to pick up their PS3s. Hell I got some friends that have never owned a console in their life and are picking up the Slim. Go Sony!

Exactly. If they made the PSP Go so expensive, what makes you think the slim PS3 will be cheaper than the phat?

Still, the fact remains that neither the existence for the PS3 slim nor a price drop is backed up by any solid evidence.

I don´t think PS3 Slim will reach stores this years, but I believe in a bonus, like same price with 3 games bundle.... or maximum a 50bucks discount.

@spankey

thats what I was going to ask next... do they use more than one supplier?

Well, if they have any inkling of business acumen they would do, but they are cutting down the amount of suppliers for Sony as a whole, suppliers for PS3 components would almost certainly be in that.

Their prediction for FY08 was spot on- 10 million. They wouldn't just randomly out of the blue say "HEY ITZ GONNA RISE 30%!!!!!!!", they have something up their sleeves, but with how long they've waited, I'm not sure it'll be enough to meet their, admittedly optimistic, forecast.
