I already have an HD console, I don't need another one. Having said that, an HD Wii could well mean a healthy price-cut for original Wii, which makes me somewhat more likely to buy the original Wii. And that would be my first ever Nintendo home console purchase.
So releasing HD Wii could well increase original Wii sales by 1, and I know Nintendo are reallly struggling with Wii sales right now, so they will be grateful for any sale they can get I'm sure.

If they released an HD Wii this early, the competition could just one-up the system technologically like they are doing now. However, the early release of it all could reduce the effectiveness of that. Another however is, if the Wii is selling the most, and hasn't exhausted any separate colors (MH3 is a week away), price drops , and released its holiday titles, why cut the momentum with a new console? It would put it in the same sales position as the PS2, becoming twice as obsolete. |
Nintendo hasn't always waited that long to upgrade to the next console. However they have always pushed the graphical and innovation envelope ever since the N64. With the exception of Wii's poor graphics that is. Also Nintendo's life cycles are usually five years long which means the next console is tentatively slated for a 2011 release.
I don't think Nintendo will unviel their next generation hardware at E3 2010, they will let the competition make the first move or they will wait till GDC/E3 2011. Nintendo has a decent lineup already planned for Wii in 2010, new Mario , New Zelda , New Metroid. Nintendo won't be releasing new hardware with such a robust line-up on existing hardware. Then theirs all the other games that have been announced and not shown yet, Pikmin 3 , Donkey Kong etc...etc... Nintendo's 2010 line-up is way to strong for another console to be entering the market.
If you think about it, Nintendo always leaves the last generation console about 6-months before the next gen begins. With so many titles coming in 2010 it is highly unlikely that a new Wii will launch then. I expect a new Wii to be unvieled at E3 2011.
As for trading in my Wii for the Wii2. Not gonna happen, I have way too many Virtual Console and WiiWare titles that I would loose trading it in. I have spent almost 300$ on Wii points cards and the loss of all that software would be devestating. Though I am considering sending my Wii in for some repairs soon. Its making alot of noise!

i would never play lets say a mario kart in HD, it would ruin the game, i think that "nintendo" graphics are fine and there is no need for HD. i like the graphics the way they are.
but then for 3rd party games like World at War, HD would be really needed.
He's trying to predict next-gen. End of 2010/2011 is the 4-5 year mark.
Yeah, I want the DS to be HD too.
Imagine Wii Sports Resort in HD, Wii Fit, Mario Kart Wii in HD it would be awes....... wait a minute.
Sorry, I thought for a minute that graphics actually make a difference to a game. My mistake.

So you're saying graphics don't matter at all?
