We're pissed because on a website dedicated to videogame sales we're actually curious about the financial viability of this title and not so much empty numbers like 5 million users, none of which are required to pay a cent into the game? What are you talking about? Now it's crazy and sane people? No one mentioned crazy/sane at all. I said you don't understand what pissed off is if you believe me and darconi were pissed when typing our posts. If you used a poor choice of words, just say so.

All we said is we'd like numbers that matter. I don't see what in that made us seem angry, merely curious for more pertinent info about the game's sales. It's a free MMO. 5 million people can use it or 1 billion people can use it, but until Sony makes a dollar off microtransactions, each person is merely a burden to the financial viability of the game.

I really don't see why calling the number out for what it is makes us pissed off. Excuse me if you expected a parade over this news, but 5 million visitors to a website trying out a free game is not the same as Metal Gear Solid 4 hitting 4 million in sales.

I still don't see the connection between "immaturely crazy people" being pissed off, and you trying to be as sane as you can.

I'm still waiting for your explanation as to why myself and darconi are so pissed off though, since that's really what I was addressing.

You should see either two people derailing the thread, or if you have a mirror handy, three people. Actually now that I look back on the thread, I'm the only one of the three of us that has actually commented on the article.

It's too bad that its success didn't stop SOE from laying off 5% of its workforce. I also have to laugh at their claimed leadership role in the online games industry.  I guess they chose to ignore Blizzard much like they chose to ignore Nintendo and Microsoft when they also claimed official leadership in the video game industry this year.  I guess Sony has a leadership role in just about everything they do these days.

Despite the runaway success of Free Realms and the growing anticipation for DC Universe Online, Sony Online Entertainment feels the layoff lash, confirming a 5% workforce reduction with Kotaku.

Upon getting word of the layoffs from IndustryGamers, we contacted our SOE rep to see if we could glean any more information regarding the layoffs, which have eliminated 41 full-time employees. SOE quickly shot back the same official statement the other site received:

In a move to increase operational efficiency and reduce costs, Sony Online Entertainment has eliminated 5% of its full-time workforce, equaling 41 people. SOE looks forward to continuing its leadership role in the online games industry as it celebrates the highly successful launch of Free Realms, the 10-year commemoration of its ground-breaking EverQuest franchise, and the continued performance of the company's other games.
