don't forget the WI-FI and the High dev DVD player. The design

I think the theoretical price difference is like 400$. So the Xbox360 is more expensive for what you get.

The Blu-ray palyerr will get more valuable if the games get more bigger then they already are.

What happens if a game is like 50 gig, are you willing to load 5 discs just to play your game?

What you get is a video game machine. You can break down exactly what everything is and then try to claim it is relatively inexpensive, but that would be a stretch. By your logic, you could claim the Wii is the most expensive console this generation. That is the kind of ridiculous that logic is.

As for the 5 DVDs, yes I would be willing to do that. I don't see why everyone thinks it is a huge inconvinience. The jump seems unwarranted as well. The jump from CD to DVD was actually a lot more dramatic (relatively) but we did not see a huge jump in game length. Despite the fact that FF7 technically only used up less than half a DVD at best (3 CDs is 2.1 gigs tops where as a single layer dvd is 4.9), the next FF game to use a DVD (FF10) was not twice as long. FF10-2 was actually shorter in my experience. The jump in format size only makes sense after people have started to run into limits with the previous format. That just has not been the case for the vast majority of games.

I can understand that people say 400$ is expensive. I rather have them say I can't pay 400$ now or I don't have that budget.

It's like saying Mercedes is to expensive knowing you can't afford it.

If you can't afford a mercedes(PS3) you buy a FIAT(wii) or a Alfa Romeo(xbox)

It is like saying a Mercedes is too expensive for what it is. I spend more money than what a PS3 would cost me everytime I switch cars. The problem is, I am not willing to drop that kind of cash on a game system when there are cheaper alternatives. Using your analogy, I could buy a Lexus but I don't feel it is worth the asking price so I won't buy it. Given limitless money I would still find it to be too expensive for what it is. Game systems simply should not cost that kid of money

Okee I agree there is a flaw in my explanation.

Wii has almost got the right price. It can be cheaper concidering there is still a console called PS2

The difference between an Xbox360 and a PS3 is great.

But lets break it down again. Xbox360 lacks a built in WI-FI, HD-DVD. These alone represent 300$

THis was only the hardware.

An Elite(this is the closest to an PS3) is like 380$ (without HD-DVD/Wi-FI)

A PS340gig is 400$ (with HD-DVD/WI-FI)

Now the prices are almost at the same level.

Now look what you get for your money hardware wise

THen you get the design. The PS3 already won a European award (design and tech specification) and a dutch award.

Build in transformer unlike the Xbox360 that has it transformer outside the box.

The wireless controller that does not use oldskool batteries unlike the xbox

The wireless Sixxaxis now with rumbble

The XMB and the ability to use it as a computer.

So if a PS3 is expensive, then an Xbox360 is expensive to and to me even more expensive, because you get less for that amount you pay

Oh my, the extra argument. Who cares about the extras? That's what blowin' up the price to start off with! So what the PS3 has wifi - I don't want wifi - I have a professional network and ethernet is still way more reliable than wifi. And the BR-HD debate? Cry me a river - I don't need either of them. I have well over 100 DVDs and have no desire to upgrade to HD. I have HD on my HD DVR and honestly, it's good, but not enough for me to upgrade my movies. Sorry ... save that value argument for someone who cares.

And based on current standings, a lot of folks agree with my logic.

This is spot on. People say that the PS3 is cheap considering what you get, but what if the majority of the features don't interest you? It's like buying a box of cheap groceries when all you wanted were one or two small items inside of it.

You know I own a PS3, right?

Its just that plenty of people go off spounting how the PS3 has hit "the perfect price point" and is going "mainstream" this winter - thats just retarded.

This is the best offer so far. $399 is nothing. Seriously, you buy a system for at least 6 years. Six long years with great games. $399 isn't a drama when you consider what you gets.

For some people it's still a lot, for some others definitely not. I think both haters and supporters agree there wasn't better offer for gamers who reflect on PS3 so far. There is still a former model (cheaper) and the new one. You buy great, reliable and cheap system and you have an impressive gamebase to play. Steady stream of new games to come. No need to bitch around. Market will verify this decision. IMO we can expect permanent boost in sales. Permanent.

PS3 needs to extend userbase. Right now it's not about beating X360. As someone pointed it will take years even with extremely solid sales. It's about creating a userbase which secures support of third party developers. The truth is X360 can't lose right now even if it will finish on the last position. Developers need both systems right now. PS3 alone is extremely weak. It's pretty clear when we consider launch figures of games like Warhawk or Heavenly Sword (<100k). Purchase power of X360 owners is enormous. PS3 will build such power too but it takes times and new price. This is the new sku.

What are, you 12? Profanity is part of our vocabulary; we're going to use it when we feel particulary strong about something, or at least want to convey the sense that we feel strongly about something. Thanks, Mr.Mom.

That being said, let me ammend my first statement: What are you, fucking 12?

But yeah, to the OP, $400 is still quite a pricetag. Especially since it's not so much a price cut as much as a stripping of hardware and then paying for what we get.

Well I think the 12 year olds are the people that state $400 is too expensive!

Get a grip lads.  Look at the bigger picture here.  The PS3 as a console and Blu-ray player is now $200 cheaper than when it was released 10 months ago.  I personally don't own any of the next gen systems, but the system that I particularly want to get is the PS3 and now it is pushing it's self closer to what I want to pay.  $400 these days is not expensive.  Yes you couldn't go out and buy one each week, but is a realistic world where you work and pay for things, you could quite easily get one with your months wages surely?

Anyway, it's alot to do with value for money and IMHO, the $400 PS3 (although with no BC) is tremendous value for money.  I reckon it should sell bucket loads for the Blu-Ray player alone.  And once the games (that is good games) start appearing. It should become an essential purchase.

Also, of course a drop in $100 will push sales quite some bit as well.  If it dropped to $300 or even $200 of course it would sell much more.  But a $400 PS3 in time for Xmas is a great idea and will sell really well.

Just thought you lot would like to see these two graphs.

One show the absolute value of the consoles at launch and the other shows the relative price of the consoles at launch.

yes, that's an interesting chart there. Look at the consoles that are around the PS3's asking price. You have the early consoles, when the technology was new and expensive. And from the release of the NES, you are five real standout consoles. Saturn. 3DO, CD-i, Neo Geo, PS3.

PS3 is not in good company.

Help! I'm stuck in a forum signature!

lol...point is that $400 price point is not what the mainstream wants as you can see with the Wii against the 360. They want a $100 to $200 price range and neither Sony or Microsoft is doing that.

But Microsoft is heading in the right direction.

A $400 pricepoint defo won't be a problem for the Xmas buyers though.  This will make potential buyers of a 360 at Xmas move to get a PS3 instead IMHO.

Nice plug fanboy. Microsoft is moving in the right direction with a system only fifty dollars cheaper than the competition, but, they also have a systme fifty bucks more expensive than sony. That's right direction right? WRONG! They are in the same boat that we are in. The prices for the systems (with this forty gig ps3) are neck and neck. You can't try to sit here and say the price for the PS3 isn't "Mainstream" or is too pricey when the 360 is only within fifty bucks of the PS3 (or fifty bucks more for the elite gamers). The 360 isn't mainstream either then. So the Wii isn't mainstream cuz it's 250, 50 more than YOUR "mainstream" price. Think b4 u post. Thank you.

Guess what? The Wii is too expensive. I'm a Nintendo fan and I only have one already because I figured it was popular enough not to drop price before Galaxy came out (that, and Zelda was already out). Otherwise, I would have waited, since it's by far the most expensive gaming device I've ever bought. And if I still depended on my parents to buy me stuff, as I did 5 years ago, I wouldn't have the nerve to ask them for a €250 gift.

Reality has a Nintendo bias.
